The sculpture depicts Sir Stamford Raffles, founder of modern Singapore. Two statues exist, at the Raffles’ Landing Site and Empress Place.
Arms folded and looking thoughtfully out to sea, the white polymarble statue of Raffles at the Singapore River is often photographed.
Take your selfies with this popular figure, located at the historic Raffles’ Landing Site Site where Raffles was believed to first set foot on the island in 1819.
The statue is actually a copy of the original dark bronze statue, and was placed here in 1969 on the 150th anniversary of Singapore’s founding.
If you want to see the much older, original statue, it’s just a short stroll away, in front of Victoria Memorial Hall at Empress Place. Sculpted by renowned Thomas Woolner, it was unveiled on Jubilee Day on 27 June 1887.
Singapore’s iron man
Trivia buffs will love some of the stories behind the Raffles Statue. For one, it was nicknamed orang besi (“iron man” in Malay) when it was first unveiled.
Another quirky fact is that the first statue was relocated from its original location at the Padang in 1919. It was often hit by flying footballs during games, and early Padang spectators liked sitting at its base for a good view.
During the Japanese Occupation, the statue was moved to Syonan Museum (Raffles Museum), and it was widely believed that the Japanese had intended for it to be melted for its bronze. It was reinstalled at Empress Place in 1946.
Today, the statue is a national icon (the white version is popular on some cheeky souvenirs) and remains a symbol of modern Singapore.

The Raffles’ Landing Site is the location where tradition holds that Sir Stamford Raffles landed in on 29 January 1819. The site is located at Boat Quay within the Civic District, in the Downtown Core of the Central Area, Singapore’s central business district. His visit lasted for 10 days and during this period, he concluded the first treaty with the local rulers.
Raffles’ Landing Site is denoted by a statue of Sir Stamford Raffles.  The present polymarble statue was unveiled in 1972 which was made from plaster casts from the original 1887 figure that currently stands opposite Victoria Concert Hal
The Plaque at the landing site reads “On this historic site, Sir Thomas Stamford Raffles first landed in Singapore on 29th January 1819, and with genius and perception changed the destiny of Singapore from an obscure fishing village to a great seaport and modern metropolis.”

In the 17th century, Raja Jagat Singh of Kullu committed a great mistake. To atone for the sin, he sent a senior courtier to Ayodhya for a statue of Lord Raghunath – Lord Rama. This temple was built by Raja Jagat Singh to house the image and even today, is greatly revered. Every year international fair Dussehra is celebrated with local deities in honour of lord Raghunath.

Source :Wikipedia

The main deity of Kullu is Raghunath Ji. Dussehra event is organised in its name. The idol is same which was used by Master Rama himself at plenty of duration of Ashwamegh Yagya and was introduced from Tretnath temple of Ayodhya. The temple was designed in 1660 AD with a combined look of Pahari and Pyramidal design. Everyday puja (aarti) is organised for five periods. Throughout the season, 45 celebrations are organised. It is said that Raja Jagat Singh used charanamrit of the idol for 42 periods and was absolved.

Raj Ghat and Shanti Vana

Raj Ghat

Raj Ghat

Raj Ghat is situated to the south of Red Fort and is very peaceful.

New Delhi, DL 110006. Phone: 011 2336 3607

C:\Users\user\Desktop\Delhi & Agra\001a Rajghat.jpg

Raj Ghat is a memorial to Mahatma Gandhi. Originally it was the name of a historic ghat of Old Delhi ( Shahjahanabad ) on the banks of Yamuna river. Close to it, and east of Daryaganj was “Raj Ghat Gate” of the walled city, opening at Raj Ghat on Yamuna River. Later the memorial area was also called Raj ghat. It is a black marble platform that marks the spot of Mahatma Gandhi’s cremation, Antyesti (Antim Sanskar) on 31 January 1948, a day after his assassination. It is left open to the sky while an eternal flame burns perpetually at one end. It is located on the banks of the river Yamuna in Delhi in India on Ring Road officially known as Mahatma Gandhi Road. A stone footpath flanked by lawns leads to the walled enclosure that houses the memorial. All guests must remove their footwear before entering the Raj Ghat walls.

Other memorials
It loosely translates to King’s Bank (where King alludes to the importance of the place and Bank as in -on the bank of river Yamuna). Several other samādhis or cremation spots of other famous leaders can be found in the vicinity of Raj Ghat on the banks of the Yamuna. The landscaping and planting of these memorials was performed by Alick Percy-Lancaster, the last Englishman to hold the post of Superintendent of Horticultural Operations, Government of India.

Jawaharlal Nehru’s samadhi is to the north of the Raj Ghat and is known as the Shantivan or Shanti Vana meaning the “forest of peace”. Adjacent to Nehru’s memorial is Ekta sthal, the site where K. R. Narayanan, tenth President of India, was cremated with full state honours in 2005.

The area has a park adorned with trees planted by visiting dignitaries and heads of state.

“Sunrise at Rann of Kutch” – Image Credit : tripadvisor

The Great Rann of Kutch is a salt marsh located in the Thar Desert in the Kutch District of Gujarat, India. It is about 7,505.22 square kilometres (2,897.78 sq mi) in size and is reputed to be one of the largest salt deserts in the world. This area has been inhabited by the Kutchi people.

The Great Rann of Kutch, along with the Little Rann of Kutch and the Banni grasslands on its southern edge, is situated in the district of Kutch and comprises some 30,000 square kilometres (10,000 sq mi) between the Gulf of Kutch and the mouth of the Indus River in southern Pakistan. The marsh can be accessed from the village of Kharaghoda in Surendranagar District.

In India’s summer monsoon, the flat desert of salty clay and mudflats, which average 15 meters above sea level, fills with standing water. In very wet years, the wetland extends from the Gulf of Kutch on the west through to the Gulf of Cambay on the east.

There are sandy islets of thorny scrub, forming a wildlife sanctuary and a breeding ground for some of the largest flocks of greater and lesser flamingos. Wildlife, including the Indian wild ass, shelter on islands of higher ground, called bets, during the flooding

This is one of the hottest areas of India – with summer temperatures averaging and peaking at 49.5 °C. Winter temperatures reduce dramatically and can go below 0 °C (32 °F).

Tourism

The Government of Gujarat hosts an annual 3 month long festival during winter called the “Rann Utsav festival of the Rann” where tourists can see the various sights of the Rann.

Rann Utsav gives visitors not only a chance to experience full moon on salt deserts but also get a taste of the local culture, cuisine and hospitality. Specially built local houses are also used to house tourists to give them a taste of local traditions. Many adventure clubs and travel clubs organize expeditions.

Rao Jodha Desert Rock Park lies at the foot of Mehrangarh Fort in Jodhpur city, Rajasthan’s iconic and best known fort. The Park extends across 70 hectares-about 200 acres-of rocky land surrounding the fort. You can enter the park from Visitors Centre 800 meters from the main Fort Gate. You can also walk across the Park starting closer to the Fort or other points of entry.

Rao Jodha Desert Rock Park was created in 2006 to try and restore the natural ecology of a large, rocky wasteland next to Mehrangarh Fort in Jodhpur. It had suffered years of neglect and was overrun by baavlia (Prosopis juliflora), an invasive, thorny shrub introduced from central America almost a century ago. The challenge was to eradicate the baavlia and create a suitable home for native rock-loving plants that we would bring back from the desert.

Renuka lake (16 kms from city centre) is in the Simaur district of Himachal Pradesh in India and it is 672 m above the sea level. It is the largest lake in Himachal Pradesh, with a circumference of about 3214 m. This lake was named after the goddess Renuka. It is well connected by the road. Boating is available on the lake. A lion safari and a zoo are there at Renuka. It is the site of an annual fair held in November.

The Renuka sanctuary is situated in Sirmour district in Himachal Pradesh. The sanctuary is well connected by the network of motorable roads. The total area of the sanctuary is about 4.028 km². The entire sanctuary consists of Renuka Reserve Forest and has been declared as Abhayaranya. An area of roughly about 3 km² that lies outside the sanctuary has been declared as a buffer belt.

The sanctuary falls in the biogeographical zone IV and biogeographical province IV as per the classification done by the Wildlife Institute of India (WII). According to forest types classification, the area falls under group 5B/C2, i.e., dry mixed deciduous forest and group 5/051, i.e., dry sal forest.

The lake is threatened by continuously shrinking size. The silt which is being deposited in the lake is causing a worry to the locals and the administration. The main cause of this is the soil being deposited on the banks, with the rain water and landslides in the nearby mountains. Also the waste of construction material is being dumped into the lake for years, which is a big threat to the environment. Administration and Renuka Vikas Smiti is trying its best to protect the lake. Plastic bags are banned in the entire reg

The latest addition to China’s growing collection of eccentric buildings is a 12-storey structure in the Henan province that appears to look like a giant toilet.
Complete with a bowl, seat cover, and even a blue-coloured patch on its roof for the water, the office building for the North China of Water Conservancy and Electric Power company is said to be more likely an oversight rather than subtle homage to the industry.
The latest unusual building follows tough new planning permission guidelines announced by Beijing earlier this year that curbed the development of odd-shaped structures in the country.
“There is a phenomenon that buildings in cities are attempting to be large, western-orientated and weird,” Xinhua news agency said, in a report detailing the new rules back in February.
These “lack of characteristics make people worried about cultural heritage”, the state news agency said at the time.
The new plans calling for “applicable, economic, green, and elegant” designs followed a planning conference held last December by Chinese leaders.
The rules also came after reported comments from President Xi Jinping in December 2014 criticising China’s “weird architecture”.
Some of the country’s strangest buildings in recent years have included the NetDragon Websoft HQ, the offices of a gaming firm in the south-eastern province of Fujian, which is shaped like Star Trek’s USS Enterprise. Its striking shape was no accident. Liu DeJian, the chairman of the tech firm, is an “uber Trekkie” and was reported to have sought permission from the CBS broadcasting network in the US to create the $160m homage, which is the only officially-licensed Star Trek replica building in the world…………………………………………………..

All of us have heard tales of timeless love. In India we have one of its finest examples-the Taj Mahal. Taj nis the most famous monument to love ever built. It was created by Emperor Shah Jahan in 1653 in memory of his favourite wife Mumtaz. In 2003, Betty Karan built Revi Karunkaran memorial museum at Alappuzha in memory of her loving husband.

Alappuzha also known as Alleppey, is a town in Kerala state of southern India. A town with picturesque landscape, it was once a major port and trading centre of Kerala. It was known as the Venice of the East. Even though, Alappuzha lost its commercial prominence, it still retain its beauty and attracts thousands of tourists from within the country and all around the world. Tha canals, beaches, backwaters, boat races, and houseboats of Alappuzha are stunningly beautiful and captivate the visitors. A recent addition to this list of attractions is the Revi Karunakaran museum.

The family was avid collectors of fine art and artefacts for over three generations. The collection was maintained in private domain. After Ravi’s demise, Betty decided to open the collection to the public. Betty and Lullu have dedicated the museum in the memory of a most beloved husband and loving father. The museum was inaugurated on the 22nd November 2006 by the former Meghalaya governor, Sri.M.M.Jacob.

The RKK museum is an architectural marvel. The museum, which has an area of 28000 sqft, took about three years to complete. One unique feature of the museum is that you will see that the four major religions in India- Hinduism, Christianity, Islam and Buddhism- have equal prominence on the mural, ivory collection, Kerala room and the items displayed in the old wing.

Rewalsar Lake, or Tso Pema Lotus Lake, is a mid-altitude lake located on a mountain spur in Mandi district, 22.5 km south-west from Mandi. Its elevation is about 1,360 m above sea level.

The lake is shaped like a square with the shoreline of about 735 m. It is held as a sacred spot for Hindus, Sikhs and Buddhists alike. With water, woodland and high hills, it presents a variety of natural beauty.

There are three Buddhist monasteries at Rewalsar. The lake also has three Hindu temples dedicated to Lord Krishna, Lord Shiva and to the sage Lomas. Another holy lake, Kunt Bhyog which is about 1,750 m above sea level lies above Rewalsar. It is associated with the escape of ‘Pandavas ‘ from the burning palace of wax—an episode from the epic Mahabharata.

It was from here that the great Indian teacher and `Tantric` Padmasambhava left for Tibet. Known to the Tibetans as ‘Guru Rinpoche’, the Precious Master, it was under Padmasambhava’s influence that Mahayana Buddhism spread over Tibet. There are islands of floating reed on Rewalsar lake and the spirit of Padmasambhava is said to reside in them. It is here that the sage Lomas did penance in devotion to Lord Shiva, and the Sikh guru Gobind Singh (22 December 1666 – 7 October 1708), the tenth Guru of Sikhism, also resided here for one month.

The Sisu fair held in late February/early march, and the festival of Baisakhi are important events at Rewalsar.

Road to Hana

Road to Hana

Hana Tours of Maui - 2021 All You Need to Know BEFORE You Go (with Photos) - Tripadvisor

The Hana Highway (colloquially referred to as The Road to Hana) is a 64.4-mile-long (103.6 km) stretch of Hawaii Routes 36 and 360 which connects Kahului to the town of Hana in east Maui. To the east of Kalepa Bridge, the highway continues to Kipahulu as Hawaii Route 31 (the Piilani Highway). Although Hana is only about 52 miles (84 km) from Kahului, an uninterrupted car-trip takes about 2.5 hours to drive, since the highway is very windy, narrow, and passes over 59 bridges, of which 46 are only one lane wide. There are approximately 620 curves along Route 360 from just east of Kahului to Hana, almost all of it through lush, tropical rainforest. Many of the concrete and steel bridges date back to 1910 and all but one are still in use. That one bridge, badly damaged by erosion, has been replaced by a portable steel ACROW bridge erected by the United States Army Corps of Engineers.

In August 2000, the highway was designated as the Hana Millennium Legacy Trail by President Bill Clinton, with the trail start designated in Pāʻia. The Hana Highway was listed on the National Register of Historic Places on June 15, 2001.

The Hana Highway is a popular tourist attraction in Maui. Guidebooks often devote large sections to traveling the highway leading to the eastern side of Maui, documenting the many waterfalls and attractions that can be found along the way. Some of these attractions lie within or through private property and will often have “no trespassing” signs posted or even signs claiming that the attraction does not exist. All beaches in Hawaii are public. Some guidebooks document the “keep out” areas and ways past barbed wire fences and locked gates to reach attractions.

Beyond the town of Hana, the Hana Highway becomes Hawaii State Road 330 and leads to the ʻOheʻo Gulch where the Seven Sacred Pools are located within the Kipahulu Area of the Haleakala National Park.

Occasionally the dirt road past Route 31 is closed to traffic due to landslides. However, although it is somewhat rough in places, it is by no means a daunting or particularly dangerous road if taken slowly.

Scenic turnouts abound, including one for Wailua Falls near the Seven Sacred Pools in Oheʻo.

Kruger National Park

Kruger National Park is one of the largest game reserves in Africa. It covers an area of 19,485 square kilometres (7,523 sq mi) in the provinces of Limpopo and Mpumalanga in northeastern South Africa, and extends 360 kilometres (220 mi) from north to south and 65 kilometres (40 mi) from east to west. The administrative headquarters are in Skukuza. Areas of the park were first protected by the government of the South African Republic in 1898, and it became South Africa’s first national park in 1926.

To the west and south of the Kruger National Park are the two South African provinces of Limpopo and Mpumalanga. In the north is Zimbabwe, and to the east is Mozambique. It is now part of the Great Limpopo Transfrontier Park, a peace park that links Kruger National Park with the Gonarezhou National Park in Zimbabwe, and with the Limpopo National Park in Mozambique.

The park is part of the Kruger to Canyons Biosphere an area designated by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) as an International Man and Biosphere Reserve (the “Biosphere”).

The park has nine main gates allowing entrance to the different camps.

The park lies in the north-east of South Africa, in the eastern parts of Limpopo and Mpumalanga provinces. Phalaborwa, Limpopo is the only town in South Africa that borders the Kruger National Park. It is one of the largest national parks in the world, with an area of 19,485 square kilometres (7,523 sq mi), almost the Size of Wales. The park is approximately 360 kilometres (220 mi) long, and has an average width of 65 kilometres (40 mi). At its widest point, the park is 90 kilometres (56 mi) wide from east to west.

To the north and south of the park two rivers, the Limpopo and the Crocodile respectively, act as its natural boundaries. To the east the Lebombo Mountains separate it from Mozambique. Its western boundary runs parallel with this range, roughly 65 kilometres (40 mi) distant. The park varies in altitude between 200 metres (660 ft) in the east and 840 metres (2,760 ft) in the south-west near Berg-en-Dal. The highest point in the park is here, a hill called Khandzalive. Several rivers run through the park from west to east, including the Sabie, Olifants, Crocodile, Letaba, Luvuvhu and Limpopo Rivers.

Rohtang Pass

Rohtang Pass

Rohtang Pass

Rohtang Pass , (elevation 3,978 m (13,050 ft)), is a high mountain pass on the eastern Pir Panjal Range of the Himalayas around 51 km (32 mi) from Manali.

The Rohtang pass provides a natural divide between the humid Kullu Valley with a primarily Hindu culture (in the south), and the arid high-altitude Lahaul and Spiti valleys with a Buddhist culture (in the north). The pass lies on the watershed between the Chenab and Beas basins. On the southern side of this pass, the Beas River emerges from underground and flows southward and on its northern side, the Chandra River (flows from the eastern Himalayas), a source stream of the river Chenab, flows westward.

The pass is open from May to November. It is not particularly high or difficult to cross on foot by Himalayan standards, but it has a well-deserved reputation for being dangerous because of unpredictable snowstorms and blizzards.

This pass is an ancient trade route between the people on either side of Pir Panjal.

National Highway 21 (NH 21), the road through the Kullu Valley, past Manali and over the Rohtang Pass to Keylong, and Lahul  and on to Leh in Ladakh, has become very busy during the summer months as an alternate military route, following the Kargil Conflict in 1999 in addition to tensions in Kashmir. Traffic jams are common as military vehicles, trucks, and goods carriers try to navigate the tight roads and rough terrain, compounded by snow and ice at certain points and the large number of tourists vehicles.

Rohtang road tunnel
Due to the military significance of the highway and the need to keep it open the entire year, the Indian government began building the $320 million 8.5 km (5.3 mi) long Rohtang Tunnel in 2010 to bypass Rohtang pass for creating a much safer and faster year-around link to Keylong, Lahaul and Spiti and Leh in Ladakh. The tunnel will also shorten the distance by about 50 km (31 mi) and reduce the travel time between the southern and northern faces of Rohtang pass by five hours. While it now takes 4 to 6 hours to ascend, negotiate and descend the Rohtang pass, it will take only about 30 minutes to travel through the Rohtang tunnel.

Roman Forum

Roman Forum

The Roman Forum, also known as the Forum Romanum in Latin, is one of the most significant and iconic archaeological sites in Rome, Italy. It was the heart of ancient Rome, serving as the center of Roman public life, politics, commerce, and culture for centuries. Here are some key facts about the Roman Forum:

Historical Significance: The Roman Forum dates back to the 7th century BC and was initially a marketplace and a meeting place for the people of Rome. Over the centuries, it evolved to become the political, religious, and cultural center of the Roman Republic and later the Roman Empire.

Architectural Layout: The Roman Forum was a sprawling complex of public squares, temples, basilicas, and other important buildings. It was surrounded by hills, including the Capitoline Hill, the Palatine Hill, and the Esquiline Hill.

Basilicas: Several basilicas were located within the Forum, including the Basilica Aemilia, Basilica Julia, and the Basilica of Maxentius. These structures served as meeting places and law courts.

Temples: The Forum housed several temples dedicated to Roman gods and goddesses, including the Temple of Saturn, the Temple of Vesta, the Temple of Castor and Pollux, and the Temple of Caesar.

Arch of Septimius Severus: The arch, built in AD 203 to commemorate the victories of Emperor Septimius Severus and his sons, stands at the northwest end of the Forum.

Curia Julia: The Curia Julia was the Senate House where the Roman Senate convened. It has undergone several renovations over the centuries.

Arch of Titus: This arch was built in AD 81 to honor the Flavian Emperor Titus for his victory in Jerusalem. It is famous for its depictions of the spoils from the Jewish Temple in Jerusalem.

The Rostra: The Rostra was a raised platform in the Forum where orators and politicians addressed the people. The term “rostrum” in English, referring to a speaker’s platform, is derived from this feature.

Vestal Virgins: The Temple of Vesta housed the Vestal Virgins, who were priestesses responsible for maintaining the sacred fire of Rome. They played a significant religious role in ancient Roman society.

Decline and Preservation: The Roman Forum fell into disrepair after the fall of the Western Roman Empire, and many of its structures were scavenged for building materials. In the Middle Ages, it was used as a grazing ground and was buried under layers of debris. It was not until the Renaissance that excavation and preservation efforts began.

Archaeological Site: Today, the Roman Forum is an open-air archaeological museum, and visitors can explore the well-preserved ruins and marvel at the historical and architectural significance of this ancient site.

Palatine Hill and Colosseum: The Roman Forum is directly connected to the Palatine Hill and the Colosseum, and it’s common for visitors to explore all three sites in a single visit.

The Roman Forum is a must-visit destination for those interested in Roman history and architecture. It serves as a powerful reminder of the grandeur of ancient Rome and its central role in shaping Western civilization.

The Royal Palace Madrid (Spanish: Palacio Real de Madrid) is the official residence of the Spanish Royal Family at the city of Madrid, although now only used for state ceremonies. The palace has 135,000 square metres (1,450,000 sq ft) of floor space and contains 3,418 rooms. It is the largest functioning Royal Palace and the largest by floor area in Europe.

King Felipe VI and the Royal Family do not reside in the palace, choosing instead the significantly more modest Palace of Zarzuela on the outskirts of Madrid.

The palace is owned by the Spanish State and administered by the Patrimonio Nacional, a public agency of the Ministry of the Presidency. The palace is located on Calle de Bailén (“Bailén Street”) in the western part of downtown Madrid, east of the Manzanares River, and is accessible from the Ópera metro station. Several rooms in the palace are regularly open to the public except during state functions. An admission fee of €13 is required, however some days it is free.

The interior of the palace is notable for its wealth of art and the use of many types of fine materials in the construction and the decoration of its rooms. It includes paintings by artists such as Caravaggio, Juan de Flandes, Francisco de Goya, and Velázquez, and frescoes by Giovanni Battista Tiepolo, Corrado Giaquinto, and Anton Raphael Mengs. Other collections of great historical and artistic importance preserved in the building include the Royal Armoury of Madrid, porcelain, watches, furniture, silverware, and the world’s only complete Stradivarius string quintet.

In naval terminology, a destroyers is a fast, maneuverable long-endurance warship intended to escort larger vessels in a fleet, convoy or battle group and defend them against smaller powerful short-range attackers. They were originally developed in the late 19th century as a defence against torpedo boats, and by the time of the Russo-Japanese War in 1904, these “torpedo boat destroyers” (TBDs) were “large, swift, and powerfully armed torpedo boats designed to destroy other torpedo boats.” Although the term “destroyer” had been used interchangeably with “TBD” and “torpedo boat destroyer” by navies since 1892, the term “torpedo boat destroyer” had been generally shortened to simply “destroyer” by nearly all navies by the First World War…………………………………………………………………………………………..

Sabarimala is a Hindu pilgrimage centre located at the Peryar Tiger Reserve in the Western Ghat mountain ranges of Pathanamthitta District, Perunad grama panchayat in Kerala. It is one of the largest annual pilgrimages in the world, with an estimated over 100 million devotees visiting every year. Ayyappan’s temple is situated amidst 18 hills. The temple is situated on a hilltop at an altitude of 468 m (1,535 ft) above mean sea level, and is surrounded by mountains and dense forests. The dense forest, (Periyar Tiger Reserve), around the temple is known as Poomkavanam. Temples exist in each of the hills surrounding Sabarimala. While functional and intact temples exist at many places in the surrounding areas like Nilakkal Kalaketty , and Karimala remnants of old temples survive to this day on remaining hills.

The shrine at Sabarimala is an ancient temple of Ayyappan also known as sasta and Dharmasasta. In the 12th century, Manikandan, a prince of Pandalam dynasty, meditated at Sabarimala temple and became one with the divine. Manikandan was an avatar of Ayyappan.

It is linked to pilgrimage predominantly undertaken by Hindus. Sabarimala pilgrims can be identified easily, as they wear black or blue dress. They do not shave until the completion of the pilgrimage, and smear Vibhuti or sandal paste on their forehead.

The temple is open for worship only during the days of Mandalapooja (approximately 15 November to 26 December), Makaravilakku or “Makar Sankranti ” (14 January) and Maha Vishuva Sankranti (14 April), and the first five days of each Malayalam month.

The Basilica of the Sacred Heart of Paris, commonly known as Sacré-Cœur Basilica and often simply Sacré-Cœur, is a Roman Catholic church and minor basilica, dedicated to the Sacred Heart of Jesus, in Paris, France. A popular landmark and the second most visited monument in Paris, the basilica is located at the summit of the butte Montmartre, the highest point in the city. Sacré-Cœur is a double monument, political and cultural, both a national penance for the defeat of France in the 1870 Franco-Prussian War and the socialist Paris Commune of 1871 crowning its most rebellious neighborhood, and an embodiment of conservative moral order, publicly dedicated to the Sacred Heart of Jesus, which was an increasingly popular vision of a loving and sympathetic Christ.

The basilica was designed by Paul Abadie. Construction began in 1875 and was completed in 1914. The basilica was consecrated after the end of World War I in 1919.

Looking for things to do in Paris? Look no more! Sacre Coeur is a hill of 130 meters high with stunning views of the city and is part of Montmartre, one of Paris’s most popular neighborhoods, visited by millions of tourists every year. Located in the 18th arrondissement on the right bank of the river Seine, Montmartre is primarily known for the Basilica of the Sacre Coeur and its lively nightclub scene.

Many famous artists lived and worked in this area, to name a few: Salvador Dali, Claude Monet, Pablo Picasso and Vincent Van Gogh. At the end of the 19th century the Sacre Coeur hill in Montmartre became highly popular due to its free taxes and wine-making nuns, so it turned into a drinking destination and decadent entertainment until this very day. If you feel like a cabaret, or just want to visit the famous Moulin Rouge in the nearby Pigalle, it is advised to book tickets in advance to avoid disappointment…

GET TO KNOW MONTMARTRE SACRE COEUR AREA IN PARIS

Montmarte is one of the most colorful places in Paris and as designated historic area, there is a restriction on development here so much of its original character and village charm has remained. You could easily spend a few hours walking around, or if you’re in the mood for some Paris culture, head over to the Musee Montmartre, where the artist Maurice Utrillo once resided and worked and you can also see the mansion that was occupied by Renoir. Some of the artists are buried nearby, so if you feel like paying them a visit, head over to the Montmartre Cemetery.

To get to the top of hill, you can get the funicular railroad or the Montmartre bus, which will take you to the major sights on the hill. Of course, the most popular landmark on the hill is the Basilica du Sacre Coeur, which dates back to the end of the 19th century and is visited by millions each year. The Temple Expiatori de la Sagrada Família is a large unfinished Roman Catholic church in Barcelona. Designed by Catalan architect Antoni Gaudí (1852–1926), his work on the building is part of a UNESCO World Heritage Site. In November 2010, Pope Benedict XVI consecrated the church and proclaimed it a minor basilica.

In 1882, construction of Sagrada Família began under architect Francisco de Paula del Villar. In 1883, when Villar resigned, Gaudí took over as chief architect, transforming the project with his architectural and engineering style, combining Gothic and curvilinear Art Nouveau forms. Gaudí devoted the remainder of his life to the project, and he is buried in the crypt. At the time of his death at age 73 in 1926, when he was run down by a tram, less than a quarter of the project was complete.

Relying solely on private donations, Sagrada Familia’s construction progressed slowly and was interrupted by the Spanish Civil War. In July 1936, revolutionaries set fire to the crypt and broke their way into the workshop, partially destroying Gaudí’s original plans, drawings and plaster models, which led to 16 years work to piece together the fragments of the master model.Construction resumed to intermittent progress in the 1950s. Advancements in technologies such as computer aided design and computerised numerical control (CNC) have since enabled faster progress and construction past the midpoint in 2010. However, some of the project’s greatest challenges remain, including the construction of ten more spires, each symbolising an important Biblical figure in the New Testament. It is anticipated that the building can be completed by 2026, the centenary of Gaudí’s death.

The basilica has a long history of splitting opinion among the residents of Barcelona: over the initial possibility it might compete with Barcelona’s cathedral, over Gaudí’s design itself, over the possibility that work after Gaudí’s death disregarded his design, and the 2007 proposal to build a tunnel of Spain’s high-speed rail link to France which could disturb its stability. Describing Sagrada Família, art critic Rainer Zerbst said “it is probably impossible to find a church building anything like it in the entire history of art”, and Paul Goldberger describes it as “the most extraordinary personal interpretation of Gothic architecture since the Middle Ages”.

The Basilica of the Sagrada Familia is a monumental church devoted to the Holy Family: Jesus, Mary and Joseph. Construction began in 1882, based on plans drawn up by the architect Francisco de Paula del Villar, and Antoni Gaudi was commissioned to continue the project in 1883. The Temple has always been an expiatory church, built only from donations. As Gaudi said: “The Expiatory Church of the Sagrada Familia is made by the people and is mirrored in them. It is a work that is in the hands of God and the will of the people.” In 2010, Pope Benedict XVI consecrated the site as a minor basilica

Sahastra Bahu Temples

Sahastra Bahu Temples

Sahastra Bahu Temples

Udaipur, Rajasthan 313202

At Nagda in Rajasthan, stand the remains of the Sahastra Bahu temples of the early 10th century AD, dedicated to Vishnu. They are locally referred to as Sas Bahu temples (a local corruption of the original Sahastra-Bahu, meaning “One with thousand arms”, a form of Vishnu). Nagda was once an important city of Mewar, possibly a capital of one of its rulers.

The temples are now in partial ruins but one can still marvel at their original splendour, the artisanry and the perfect geometry that must have been the hallmark of that era! Roads made with white marble are also attraction of the village.

Lotus flower painting is visible on the roof top of temple. Iltutmish (Delhi emperor of that time) destroyed Nagda in 1226.

The temple is on the Archaeological Survey of India’s list of heritage monuments.

The site is very easily accessible by road, only about 20 km from Udaipur (one of the main lake & palace hotspots of Tourism in Rajasthan), a mere 2.7 km from the well frequented Shaivite shrine of Eklingji, or 30 km from the hugely popular Vaishnavite shrine town of Nathdwara.

For those excited by India’s History & Archaeology, this site deserves to be hot on the tourist map but sadly isn’t.

The church Saint – Lazare is the church of the city of Avallon in Burgundy . Its architecture is Romanesque and its portal dated xii th century . It is dedicated to Saint Lazarus
One can recognize the architectural style of the Burgundy School of the xii th century , or school of Cluny , remarkable for the elegance of decorative sculptures. Victor Petit saw besides the work of ” colonies of workers from Cluny or Autun “.
The vault in the cul-de-four who finished the apse is characteristic of this period, while the frescoes that adorn it are the xix th century .
A particularity of Saint-Lazare appears on the plan: the facade is not perpendicular to the axis of the nave . Another irregularity awaits the visitor or the faithful: the choir is located 2.50 m below the gate, level difference caught by 17 steps and large oblique landings
The chapel right of the choir includes stalls for the canons , it is decorated with paintings in trompe l’oeil of the xviii th century .
In the aisle south, one can see a stone statue of St. Michael slaying the dragon ( xiv th century ), a stone sculpture of Saint Anne and the Virgin (late xv th century ), painted wooden statues of the xvii th century .
In the gallery overlooking the nave, there is a large organ case carved in 1864 .

The Sainte Chapelle ( Holy Chapel) is a royal chapel in the Gothic style, within the medieval Palais de la Cité, the residence of the Kings of France until the 14th century, on the Île de la Cité in the River Seine in Paris, France.

Construction begun some time after 1238 and consecrated on 26 April 1248, the Sainte-Chapelle is considered among the highest achievements of the Rayonnant period of Gothic architecture. It was commissioned by King Louis IX of France to house his collection of Passion relics, including Christ’s Crown of Thorns—one of the most important relics in medieval Christendom, now hosted in Notre-Dame Cathedral.

Along with the Conciergerie, the Sainte-Chapelle is one of the earliest surviving buildings of the Capetian royal palace on the Île de la Cité. Although damaged during the French Revolution, and restored in the 19th century, it has one of the most extensive 13th-century stained glass collections anywhere in the world.

Sandalwood Forests Maryoor contains a number of sandalwood forests, and is the only place in Kerala where natural sandalwood forest is present. Processing of sandalwood and its associated oil forms part of local economy, a depot near Marayur town supporting this industry. Sandal wood or Santalum album is a parasitic tree having a fragrant and close-grained yellowish heartwood. Sandalwood oil, also known as ‘liquid gold,’ is extracted from the roots and wood of sandalwood. This oil is a costly item marketed at a few choosy outlets all over the state. A climate with low rainfall is suitable for the growth of choice sandalwood trees from which good quality oil can be extracted. The 93 km² Marayur reserve forest is believed to have about sixty thousand naturally grown sandalwood trees, of which nearly 2,000 trees had been allegedly plundered in just one year since January 2004, when the last survey was conducted. The auction rate for first quality Marayur sandal is quoted at ₹1,100 per kg, according to forest department sources (2004).

The Santa Cruz Cathedral Basilica Kochi is one of the eight Basilicas in India. This heritage edifice of Kerala is also one of the finest and imposing churches in India. Located close to the renowned St. Francis Church, this basilica serves as the cathedral church of the Diocese of Cochin, the second oldest Diocese of India.

The history of Santa Cruz Cathedral Basilica dates back to the sixteenth century and begins with the arrival of Portuguese missionaries in 1500 CE. The construction works started when the first Portuguese Viceroy Dom Francisco de Almeida got permission from the Cochin Raja to build a church. The foundation stone was laid on May 3, 1505, the feast day of the ‘Invention of the Holy Cross’, hence the church was named Santa Cruz. Meanwhile the church had undergone some serious demolition and re-erection. The present day structure was consecrated on 19 November 1905. In 1984 Pope John Paul II raised the status of Santa Cruz Cathedral to Basilica for its antiquity, artistic dignity and historical importance.

This amazing construction has two lofty spires that welcomes all even from a distance. The exterior is white-washed and astonishingly bright and the interior is pastel-coloured. The interior of the church has Gothic style architecture with its overwhelming arches and an awe-inspiring altar. The main altar was decorated by the renowned Italian painter Fr Antonio Moscheni and his disciple De Gama of Mangalore. Their contribution is still vivid in the columns that are decorated with frescoes and murals. The seven large canvas paintings including a beautiful reproduction of the ‘Last Supper’ by Leonardo da Vinci are a real feast for the eyes. The ceilings of the church are adorned with paintings that depict scenes from the Via Crucis of Christ. The beautiful stained glass windows are another attraction.

The church, for its inimitable beauty and grandeur, has become a must-see destination in Fort Kochi

Mosaics: The basilica is particularly famous for its beautiful mosaics. The 5th-century mosaics in the triumphal arch and the apse are some of the most significant early Christian mosaics in Rome. They depict scenes from the life of the Virgin Mary and the Nativity of Jesus.

Sistine Chapel: Santa Maria Maggiore is home to a smaller chapel known as the Sistine Chapel of the Basilica di Santa Maria Maggiore. It is renowned for its intricate and ornate decoration, including more stunning mosaics.

Legend of the Snow: The basilica is known for the “Miracle of the Snow,” a legend that says the Virgin Mary indicated the location for the church to be built by covering the area in snow in the middle of summer. To commemorate this event, the feast of Our Lady of the Snows is celebrated on August 5th each year.

Interior: The basilica’s interior is richly decorated with marble, sculptures, and fine artwork, making it a visually impressive and spiritually significant place for worship.

Location: Santa Maria Maggiore is situated near the Termini train station in Rome and is easily accessible for visitors to the city.

Papal Basilica: As one of the four major basilicas in Rome, Santa Maria Maggiore holds a special status and is often visited by popes, including the tradition of celebrating Mass here on the feast of the Assumption (August 15).

Santa Maria Maggiore is a significant religious and historical site in Rome and is not only a place of worship but also a cultural and architectural treasure. It continues to be a place of pilgrimage for the faithful and a point of interest for tourists exploring the city’s rich heritage.

Santhigiri Ashram is located in Pothencode, Thiruvanathapuram District , Kerala. The ashram was founded by Navajyothisree Karunakara guru and is recognized as a Social and Scientific Research Organization by the Government of India.

The followers of Karunakara guru have built a beautiful monument called Parnasala in the shape of a blooming lotus in white Makrana marble in the Ashram compound. This unique structure took 10 years for completion. It was inaugurated by the President of India Pratibha Devi Patil  on 13 August 2010 and was opened for prayers and worship on 12 September 2010. Apart from its spiritual sanctity, The Lotus Parnasala of the Ashram has become a landmark of Trivandrum and is attracting lots of tourists.

Santhigiri Ashram works towards fulfilling Navajyothi Sri Karunakara Guru’s vision of a revitalized life involving spiritual, social, economic and cultural elements. His vision emphasided on secular spirituality

Navajyothi Sree Karunakara Guru (born 1927, died 1999) was from Chandiroor, Alleppey district, Kerala. His teachings followed the theme of a global spiritual and cultural renaissance in harmony with material progress. He focused on the aspect of the soul that carries karmic merits and impurities that result in success or failure in life.

With the above vision and process, the ashram functions as a training center; people can either stay at or visit the ashram and attend services and assimilate in the teachings of the Guru by doing karma – correct actions.

Its activities are:

Annadanam

One of Guru’s objectives was to feed the poor and to this effect the ashram offers an Annadanam or gift of food, at their various centers, to all the visitors as well as inmates.

Athurasevanam

Athurasevanam or care of the ailing is a supporting function to the Guru’s vision. The ashram performs this function through a chain of Ayurveda and Siddha research centers, hospitals, onsite and offsite health care programs and camps and social research.

Athmabodhanam]

Part of the Guru’s vision for the ashram is Athmabodhanam or spiritual awakening. The awakening is at two levels – rational and transcendental; the former focuses on elimination of ignorance while the latter focuses on knowledge of reality.

Sasthamkotta, situated about 29 km from Kollam town, can be rightly called the ‘Queen of Lakes’. This vast fresh water lake flanked by hills on three sides is the largest of its kind in Kerala. The ancient Sastha Temple, which lends its name to the town, is an important pilgrim centre. This temple dedicated to both Lord Ganesha and Lord Ayyappa is surrounded by hills and forests, and the monkeys inhabiting the premises are considered holy. The monkeys of Sasthamkotta are believed to be the faithful entourage of the ruling deity, the Dharmasastha and therefore they have a spiritual ambience about them. The monkeys are devotee-friendly, and the thousands of devotees visiting the temple take pleasure in feeding these monkeys with nuts and fruits.

Savitri Temple is built on the top of a hill it is strenuous and hard to climb uphill but the views are wonderful and worthwhile. From the top of the hill the beautiful scenery of the surrounding lake and the landscape can be seen. The sand dunes that are found around the temple also attract the attention of the tourists. When Brahma performed the yajna at Pushkar, his wife Savitri could not reach the yajna in time. So Brahma performed the pooja with the help of a local girl, Gayatri – who then become the second wife of Brahma. This enraged Savitri and she sulked off to the hilltop. Then the agreement was made that Savitri would always be worshiped first. This tradition still continues, first the aarti is performed at Savitri temple and then at Gayatri temple. Idols of both Savitri and Gayatri are now installed at the Savitri temple. The marble architecture of the temple and the Brahma Temple makes both a popular draw amongst tourists.

Scandal point, as seen from the Ridge, Shimla

Scandal point is where the Mall road joins Ridge road on the west side. The name arose from the commotion caused by the supposed elopement of a British lady with an Indian Maharaja. The story goes that the then Maharaja of Patiala had eloped with the daughter of the British Viceroy. This had led to the Maharaja being banished from entering Shimla by the British authorities. He countered the move by setting himself a new summer capital – now famous hill resort of Chail, 45 km from Shimla.

The most prominent feature of the point today is a statue of the Indian freedom fighter Lala Lajpat Rai (no relation to the scandal). Next to Point is the General Post Office, Shimla.

These are just some of the fun activities that can be found at 20 permanent exhibitions such as the Ecogarden, which showcases a variety of plants, all growing naturally and receiving no special care. Defending Science exhibits the latest in surveillance, flight, armour and radar used in the battlefield, while Quirky illustrates how fun science can be with displays of unique innovations.

Shows and demonstrations are scheduled daily and are designed to make learning exciting. You can witness a spectacular Fire Tornado Demonstration in safety, get up close with a giant hissing cockroach on your hand, or gaze into the stars at the observatory.

Both kids and adults will learn something new here, and even those who aren’t science buffs will be entertained by all the weird and wonderful activities on offer.

If you thought there wasn’t enough space on a plane for a secret bedroom where cabin crew can catch 40 winks, you’d be wrong.
Photos have emerged showing sleeping quarters on an aircraft that nobody until now seemed to be aware of, where flight attendants are able to nap, read a book, or simply hide from slurring passive aggressive customers who’ve had one too many G&Ts.
Apparently accessed by an unassuming door in the cockpit, the crew quarters often consist of flat beds and even, for the pilots, business class seats and a separate bathroom.
A rendering from aircraft manufacturer Boeing shows that the hidden compartments sit above the passengers’ heads in the roof of the plane.

Escadaria Selarón, also known as the ‘Selaron Steps’, is a set of world-famous steps in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. They are the work of Chilean-born artist Jorge Selarón who claimed it as “my tribute to the Brazilian people”.

Running from Joaquim Silva street and Pinto Martins street, officially known as Manuel Carneiro street, the steps straddle the Lapa and Santa Teresa neighbourhoods in Rio de Janeiro. There are 215 steps measuring 125 metres (135 yards) long, which are covered in over 2000 tiles collected from over 60 countries around the world. No sooner than one section of the steps was ‘finished’, Selarón started work on another section, constantly changing it so that it was an ever-evolving piece of art. Selarón considered the work as “never complete” and claimed that “This crazy and unique dream will only end on the day of my death”.

Originally, tiles for the work were scavenged from various construction sites and piles of urban waste found on the Rio streets. But in later years, most of the tiles were donated by visitors from all around the world. Of the 2000+ tiles, 300-odd were hand-painted by Selarón depicting a pregnant African woman. Selarón didn’t comment on this except to say that it was a “Personal problem from my past”.

Eventually the work spilled over to steps at the foot of the Arcos da Lapa.

Sencottai railway bridge known as pathimoonnu Kannara Palam (13 Arch Bridge) is on the Kollam–Sengottai branch line, a railway line in South India which connects Kollam Junction in Kerala state and Sengottai in Tamil Nadu. The Quilon–Shencottah railway line was the first railway line in the erstwhile Travancore state and is more than a century old. The Kollam–Sengottai section is part of the Kollam–Chennai meter gauge rail route commissioned by the British in 1904. The line has been partially converted to broad gauge.

The main attraction of this bridge is, it has 13 arch. This was built by the British and it still remains as a monument of the British technology. Because before 100 years they built this 13 arch bridge without the help of cement, and the technology was known as Surki construction .It is constructed with just rocks, limestone and jaggery, and still keeping its pace with the cracked new technology bridges

The bridge is of nearly 102.72 meters long and 5.18 meters height. It has got 100 years of age and still remaining without any cracks. One side of this rail bridge is Kollam-Shenkottai National Highway and the other side is enchanted with the River Kazhuthurutti.

The rail journey through this rail line is also one of the best, because the route covers journey through dense forest, long tunnels, many steeps and downs.

Kuala Lumpur Sentral (KL Sentral) or Sentral Kuala Lumpur is a transit-oriented development that houses the main railway station of Kuala Lumpur. Opened on 16 April 2001, KL Sentral replaced the old Kaula Lumpur railway station as the city’s main intercity railway station. KL Sentral is the largest railway station in Malaysia.

KL Sentral is designed as an intermodal transport hub. Most of Kuala Lumpur’s passenger rail lines serve KL Sentral, while many intercity trains serving Peninsular Malaysia and Singapore start there. It was also designed to be a new business and financial hub for Kuala Lumpur.

KL Sentral refers to the entire 290,000 square metres of development built on the former Keretapi Tanah Melayu marshalling yard in Brickfields. The development includes the transport hub, hotels, office towers, condominiums and shopping malls.

KL Sentral has been divided into 14 land parcels, each representing a different function. Some of these lots have been fully constructed and are already in use, while others are either in the process of being built, or are still awaiting development, according to the phased programme.

The complex is conceived as a living ethnographic museum to depict the lifestyles of the folk and tribal people of the region. With an objective of increasing awareness and knowledge about the rural arts and crafts, the Shilpgram provides opportunity to rural and urban artists to come together and interact through the process of camps and workshops.

The Complex has an open air Amphitheatre with a seating capacity of approximately 8000,used for the major theatre festivals held here and the traditional folk performing arts. Each member state of the West Zone has traditional huts built within the Shilpgram , derivative of certain basic occupations fundamental to the way of life of the people of the area and also central to the culture of the country . In these traditional huts, household articles of everyday use, like terracotta , textile, wooden and metal items, decorative objects and implements are featured with appropriate signages and explanatory details with the objective to give a realistic glimpse of the people and their belongings.

The huts are constructed around an interlocking occupational theme. In this integrated pattern are five huts from Rajasthan, representing the weavers’ community from Marwar, pottery from the hilly areas of Mewar and the tribal farmer communities of the Bhil and the Sehariyas. Apart from the state’s own representation, there are seven representative huts from the state of Gujarat , five from the state of Maharashtra and five featuring the arts and crafts of Goa.

Shilpgram Festival
The Shilpgram Festival is organised every year from 21 December to December 31. The Shilpgram Fair (Shilpgram Mela), a part of the festive celebrations, serves as a destination for hand woven clothes, embroideries, mirror works and handicrafts. The Mela aids in encouraging the urban potters, visual artists and designers and the cottage industry of Rajasthan. The Festival provides opportunities for learning the craft skills through various workshops. Cultural programmes during the evening and the local food stalls attract many visitors and locals.

Shilpdarshan
Shilpdarshan is a continuing activity at Shilpgram in which traditional performing artists and craftsmen are used to draw from the interior villages of the member states. They are regularly invited to exhibit their skill and to demonstrate their crafts, and sell their works in order to have direct access to the buyers. This programme has been initiated with an aim to encourage rural craftsmen and performers.

The Superbus is a prototype high speed electric coach-like limo car that is capable of carrying 23 passengers at speeds of up to 250 kilometres per hour (160 mph) on specially designed segregated highway lanes. The Superbus project, led by Dutch astronaut professor Wubbo Ockels of the Delft University of Technology until his death in 2014 envisages a comfortable, demand-dependent door-to-door transportation rivaling the car and the train. The project, which encompass infrastructure, logistics, safety, reliability and economic viability, in addition to the design of the vehicle itself, has received funding of €7 million, largely provided by the Dutch State.
The vehicle is a 15-meter-long electric vehicle with seating for 23 passengers accessible from 16 doors with a cruising speed of 250 kilometres per hour (160 mph) and a range of 215 kilometres (134 mi).

Shrinathji Temple is a hindu temple dedicated to Shrinathji in Nathdwara. It is considered an important pilgrimage centre by Vaishnavas.

The Swarup or divine form of Shrinathji is said to be self-manifested. The idol of the Lord Krishna was being transferred to a safer place from Govardhan to protect it from the anti-Hindu, iconoclastic and barbarian destruction of the Mughal ruler Aurangzeb by the Head Goswami of the 1st House of Pushti Marg in 1669, Shri Dauji Maharaj. When the idol reached the spot at village Sihad or Sinhad, the wheels of bullock cart in which the idol was being transported sank axle-deep in mud and could not be moved any farther. The accompanying priests realised that the particular place was the Lord’s chosen spot and accordingly, a temple was built there under the rule and protection of the then Maharana Raj Singh of Mewar. Shrinathji Temple is also known as ‘Haveli of Shrinathji’ (mansion). The temple was built by Goswami priests in 1672.

Sidh Baba Ka Mandir (1.5 km) : Maharaja Bhupinder Singh originally began building his palace at this site. It is said that a Sidh – saintly person – appeared before the Maharaja in dream and declared that this was the place where he had this temple built.

Source : hptdc.nic.in

Sidh Baba Ka Mandir, dedicated to the Hindu saint named Sidh Baba, is a revered religious site in Chail. This shrine is located atop a hill, between Rajgarh and Pandhawa.

According to local legend, Maharaja Bhupinder Singh – the king of Patiala planned and commenced the construction of a palace at this spot. One day, Sidh Baba came in the king’s dreams and informed that he used to perform meditation on that hill and was cremated there. The saint also said that the hill is pious and not suitable for residential purposes. Hence the valiant Maharaja constructed a temple and dedicated to the saint and mandir was accepted as ‘Sidh Baba Ka Mandir’. The ambience is breathtaking and the Mandir is an acceptable picnic spot to visit.

In order to reach the main temple one has to climb some stairs but once you get here you will really be amazed. The huge for one, endowed with trees and open courtyards, there is separate alcove for each deity, which looks very elegant indeed. The temple and its ambiance are very calm and peaceful which easily entice the travelers here in Chail.

The core of the Nilgiri Biosphere Reserve, the Silent Valley National Park is probably one of the most magnificent gifts of nature to mankind, a unique preserve of tropical rain forests in all its pristine glory with an almost unbroken ecological history. Silent Valley is closed on all sides with high and continuous ridges and steep escarpments, as a result the valley is shielded from the extremes of climate as well as anthropogenic interventions and so it remained an ecological island with a special micro climate. The river Kunthi descends from the Nilgiri Hills above an altitude of 2000 m and traverses the entire length of the valley finally rushing down to the plains through a deep gorge.

The Singapore Art Museum focuses on contemporary art practice in Singapore and Southeast Asia. It advocates and makes accessible interdisciplinary contemporary art through research-led and evolving curatorial practice.

Opened in January 1996, the Singapore Art Museum has built up one of the most important collections of contemporary art from the region.

Exhibitions change every few months and feature a wide range of art forms, from paintings and sculptures to installation art and moving media. SAM also regularly collaborates with leading international museums to present shows covering both local and international art practices, as well as cutting edge art expressions.

Housed in a restored 19th-century mission school, St Joseph’s Institute, SAM has more to offer than just art. Architecture lovers will have a field day too, exploring the carefully conserved building which was established in 1867. The original details of the building structure have been retained as much as possible, including the plasterwork of the façade at the main entrance, the roof patina, and floor tiles, while keeping in mind the stringent requirements of an art museum.

Source : yoursingapore.com

Collections
SAM’s approach is to present works curated from the Permanent Collection alongside changing exhibitions, to offer a well-rounded aesthetic experience of Asian contemporary art. From 2001, the museum began acquiring works and accepting donations from around the region, including regional contemporary artists like Cheo Chai Hiang, Dinh Q Le, Natee Utarit, Nge Lay, Suzann Victor and Titarubi.

The museum also regularly partners with other leading art institutions to co-curate and produce exhibitions, such as the collaboration with Deutsche Bank and the Yokohama Museum of Art for Still Moving: A Triple Bill on the Image; Tokyo’s Museum of Contemporary Art for Trans-Cool TOKYO (highlighting works by Japanese artists such as Yayoi Kusama and Yasumasa Morimura); and Video, An Art, A History with the Pompidou Center (Bill Viola, Jean-Luc Godard, Bruce Nauman).

The museum organizes regularly contemporary art exhibitions and events. It has for example invited twice the French artist Stéphane Blanquet to present installations. Once for the Night Lights festival in 2012, with “Distorted Forest” and once for Art Gardens in 2013, with “Glossy Dreams in Depths”.

The Singapore Botanic Gardens is a 156-year-old tropical garden located at the fringe of the Singapore’s main shopping belt. It is one of three gardens, and the only tropical garden, to be honored as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The Botanic Gardens has been ranked Asia’s top park attraction since 2013, by Trip Advisor Travellers’ Choice Awards. It was declared the inaugural Garden of the Year, International Garden Tourism Awards in 2012, and received Michelim’s three-star rating in 2008.

The National Orchid Garden, within the main gardens, is at the forefront of orchid studies and a pioneer in the cultivation of hybrids , complementing the nation’s status as a major exporter of cut orchids. Aided by the equatorial climate, it houses the largest orchid collection of 1,200 species and 2,000 hybrids.

Early in the nation’s independence, Singapore Botanic Gardens’ expertise helped to transform the island into a tropical Garden City, an image and moniker for which the nation is widely known. In 1981, the hybrid climbing orchid, Vanda Miss Joaquim, was chosen as the nation’s national flower. Singapore’s “orchid diplomacy” honors visiting head of states, dignitaries and celebrities, by naming its finest hybrids after them; these are displayed at its popular VIP Orchid Gardens.

Singapore’s botanic gardens is the only one in the world that opens from 5 a.m. to 12 midnight every day of the year. More than 10,000 species of flora is spread over its 82-hectares area, which is stretched vertically; the longest distance between the northern and southern ends is 2.5 km (1.6 mi). The Botanic Gardens receives about 4.5 million visitors annually.

The Singapore Gondola (Singapore cable car) provides an aerial link from Mount Faber (Faber Peak Singapore) on the main island of Singapore to the resort island of Sentosa across the Keppel Harbour.

The bi-cable, detachable-grip gondola lift system has three stations, namely Mount Faber Station at the peak of Mount Faber, the HarbourFront Station at HarbourFront and the Sentosa Station at Imbiah, Sentosa. Two supporting towers are located between each pair of stations. This distance between Mount Faber Station and the first tower is about 300 metres (1,000 ft), from the first tower to the Harbour Front Station is 400 metres (1,300 ft), from the Harbour Front Station to the second tower at 500 metres (1,640 ft), and from the second tower to the Sentosa Station is 450 metres long.

The height of the track rope is as follows:

Mount Faber Station: 93 m (300 ft) above mean sea level

Tower 1: 80 m (260 ft) above mean sea level

Harbour Front Station: 69 m (225 ft) above mean sea level

Tower 2: 88 m (288 ft) above mean sea level

Sentosa Station: 47 m (154 ft) above mean sea level

The system currently consists of 81 cabins, suspended at least 60 metres (197 ft) above the sea, and about 61 m (200 ft) between each cabin (or one cabin per 15 to 21 seconds). Each cabin can carry a maximum of 6 adult passengers, while the whole system can support 1400 passengers per hour either way. Travelling at a speed of 4 metres per second (13 ft/s), it takes about 4 minutes to get from Mount Faber to Jardine Steps, and another 5.5 minutes to continue on to Sentosa. Including the short interval at Jardine Steps, however, it will take 12 minutes on a continuous ride from Mount Faber to Sentosa.

In addition, there are 27 red-coloured aircraft warning balls mounted on a telephone rope just above the cableway.

The Singapore City Gallery tells the story of the city’s physical transformation.
There are few places in the world that have transformed themselves from a backwater village to a first-world metropolis in just 50 years.
Singapore has pulled off this amazing feat, and with it has come a remarkable physical transformation that sees skyscrapers and other iconic structures emerge to create a distinctive city skyline. Singapore City Gallery documents the nation’s planning challenges and effort in over 10 thematic areas and more than 50 audiovisual and interactive exhibits spanning three floors.
One key attraction is the massive architectural model that gives you a bird’s eye view of the city centre, which comes alive with a light and sound show. Another key attraction allows you to immerse yourself in the city through a 270-degree panoramic show that depicts scenes of daily life in Singapore from dusk to dawn.
You may also want to check out the other interactive activities to get a taste of city planning and insights into the country’s conservation efforts. It’s a multi-sensory experience that takes you deep into Singapore’s exciting planning journey.

Central Area Mode
Photo of Central Area Model, taken during light and sound show at Singapore City Gallery. Orchard Road, at bottom left, is highlighted by purple light.
The Central Area Model is an 11 metre by 10 metre architectural model of Central Singapore. Modelled at a scale of 1:400, the model is mainly constructed from balsa wood and acrylic, and is composed of various individual area models built in the past, which were assembled into one model for display in the gallery. The model is frequently updated and is used by Urban Redevelopment Authority architects as a working model of the area to simulate new growth areas and discuss options between community, developers and government.. In addition to showing currently existing buildings in the area, the model also models plans for as-yet-unbuilt buildings.

Central Area Discoverer
The Gallery, designed for self-discovery, has many interactive exhibits and stations, one of which is Central Area Discoverer, an interactive library of stories, videos and 1000 pictures of Singapore’s city centre, its past, present and future, the urban planning efforts in finding innovative solution to space constraints and a growing population, balancing old world charm with an ultra modern cityscape. The Discoverer is the interactive core of Rediscover Singapore, a unique online cultural resource for residents that was honoured a Finalist of the Stockholm Challenge Award in 2008, under the Culture Category. The Award is an annual international award selected by a jury comprising some of the foremost global IT-entrepreneurs.

Singapore Philatelic Museum, housed in a 19th century building that was formerly part of the Anglo-Chinese School, is the custodian and curator of Singapore and world treasures of philatelic history. The museum’s collections range from stamps and archival philatelic material of Singapore from the 1830s to present day, and stamps from member countries of the Universal Postal Union.

The permanent galleries introduce the world of philately, the world’s first stamp, and how stamps are a window to the world – affording windows into diverse areas such as science, technology, history and culture. Throughout the year, the museum holds special exhibitions on topics related to current social and cultural trends. It also organises educational activities for schools and members of the public, to promote learning and discovery through philately.

The Singapore Philatelic Museum  is  about the postal history of Singapore and its stamps. The museum, located at 23-B Coleman Street in Singapore, was formerly part of the Anglo-Chinese School, completed in 1906. In the 1970s, the building became the Methodist Book Room until it was restored to become the present museum.

Singapore Philatelic Museum opened on 19 August 1995 to promote interest in and the appreciation of Singapore’s history and heritage in philately. Besides the permanent galleries, the theme galleries offer a host of changing exhibitions throughout the year. These include displays from the private collections of renowned philatelists, travelling exhibitions from overseas and themed exhibitions to commemorate new stamp issues. The museum has a stamp shop, and is popular with stamp collectors.

There are files where visitors can inspect all of the Republic of Singapore stamps issued. Also on exhibit is a German forgery of a British postage stamp printed during World War II which intentionally has a printing error which mocks King George VI.

Singapore Zoo is a beautiful, award-winning wildlife park, where animals can roam freely in their natural habitats.

At this beautifully designed zoo where animals live in naturalistic habitats, you can trek along foot tracks or hop on to a guided tram to see natural wonders like the endangered white tiger and the world’s largest collection of proboscis monkeys.

The exhibits are divided into 11 zones, each a unique immersive experience waiting to be explored. In the Fragile Forest you will enter a massive biodome that recreates the amazing diversity of the rainforest.

Here you can find mousedeer on the forest floor, or climb to the observation deck to catch a glimpse of the flying foxes that often glide over the heads of visitors!

Visit the polar bear and other Arctic inhabitants at the Frozen Tundra, the coolest exhibit yet. Other zones include the Primate Kingdom, where each of the 39 primates on display have their own island, or the Reptile Garden, which houses giant tortoises and fearsome Komodo dragons.

The zoo is ideal for families. The kids will be kept busy with activities like the Kidzranger Tour, which lets them try their hand at being a zoo keeper.

Sisodia Rani Garden and Palace is a palace garden 6 kilometres (3.7 mi) from Jaipur. It was built by Maharaja Sawai Jai Singh II in 1728. The place consists of tiered multi-level gardens with fountains, watercourses and painted pavilions. A double storied palace occupies the top terrace of the garden. The palace has many galleries, pavilions and beautiful murals depicting scenes from the life of lord Krishna. The palace lies on Jaipur Agara highway.

The palace garden derives its name, Sisodia Rani Garden and Palace, from the rani (queen) for whom it was built. She hailed from the Sisodia line of Suryavanshi (Sun-Dynasty) Rajputs, who ruled and now nominally rule the region of Mewar in Rajasthan.

The palace was featured in the 1991 Indian film “[Lamhe]”, as the home of actor [Anil Kapoor]’s character Viren. [Rambagh Palace], near Jaipur, also served the same function. The film’s song “Mohe Chedo Naa”, pictured on actress [Sridevi]’s character Pallavi, was filmed at the palace as well.

The small fishing village of Skala sits on the southern tip of Kefalonia near Mounda bay. It is known for its beautiful layout and long sandy beach. has a beautiful long sandy beach bordered by dense bush hills and rocky outcrop.
The beautiful beach is bordered by dense lush hills and rocky outcrops, a unique combination that captivates many visitors. The beach has been awarded with the Blue Flag for its cleanness and organization, something that is still famous for. Skala gets quite crowded during the summer season but you can still find a secluded spot for some quiet moments.
The beach is ideal for snorkeling while excursion boats depart to the nearby islets and isolated coves. On the main street of the settlement, right above the beach are plenty of restaurants and cafes, mini markets and other modern amenities.

Snake temple

Snake Temple

Snake temple

Jalan Sultan Azlan Shah, 11900 Bayan Lepas, Pulau Pinang, Malaysia

Front view of Snake Temple

The Snake Temple is situated in Sungai Kluang, Bayan Lepas, Southwest Penang, Penang, Malaysia and is perhaps the only temple of its kind in the world. The temple is filled with the smoke of burning incense and a variety of pit vipers. The vipers are believed to be rendered harmless by the sacred smoke, but as a safety precaution, the snakes have also been de-venomed but still have their fangs intact. Visitors are warned against picking up the reptiles and placing them on their bodies to take pictures. Local devotees believe the temple’s snake population comes there of its own accord.

The Snake temple was built about 1850 in memory of Chor Soo Kong , by a Buddhist monk. Chor Soo Kong (also known as Qingshui) was born in China with the surname Tan or Tan Chhiau-eng in China during the Song Dynasty (960-1279). He was serious about seeking spiritual attainment and was ordained at an early age. According to legend, Chor Soo Kong was also a healer and sometimes gave shelter to the snakes of jungle. When he died at age 65 after a lifetime of good deeds, he was awarded the honorific title Chor Soo, that of an eminent figure revered generation after generation. After the construction of the temple, snakes reportedly appeared by themselves. The temple was originally called the “Temple of the Azure Cloud” in honor of the beauty of Penang’s sky.

Believers from as far away as Singapore and Taiwan come to pray in the Snake temple on Chor Soo Kong’s birthday (the sixth day of the first lunar month).

The temple was featured during the 8th leg of The Amazing Race 16

The temple is a location in Tan Twan Eng’s novel “The Gift of Rain” (book 1, chapter 4).

The Central–Mid-Levels escalator and walkway system in Hong Kong is the longest escalator (outdoor covered)  system in the world. Engineered by French company Constructions indistrielles de la Mediterranee the entire system covers over 800 metres (2,600 ft) in distance and elevates over 135 metres (443 ft) from bottom to top. It was constructed in 1993 to provide a better commute by linking areas within the Central and Western District on Hong Kong Island.

Since it was officially opened to the public on 15 October 1993, the escalator system has played a very important role in pedestrianising the Western District. It links Queen’s Road Central in Central with Conduit Road in the Mid-Levels, passing through narrow streets. The daily traffic exceeds 85,000 people, although originally forecast 27,000. At Queen’s Road Central, the Central–Mid-Levels escalators system is connected through Central Market to the Central Elevated Walkway, an extensive footbridge network covering the Central area.
The total travel time is twenty minutes, but most people walk while the escalator moves to shorten their trip. Due to the geographical situation, the same distance is equivalent to several miles of zigzagging roads if travelling by car. It consists of 18 escalators and three inclined moving walkways. According to Guinness World Records, these escalators together form the longest escalator (outdoor covered) system.

Solang Nala (Valley) drives its name from combination of words Solang (Nearby village) and Nullah (water stream). It is a side valley at the top of the Kullu Valley in Himachal Pradesh,  14 km northwest of the resort town Manali on the way to Rohtang Pass, and is known for its summer and winter sport conditions. The sports most commonly offered are parachuting, paragliding, skating and Zorbing.

Giant slopes of lawn comprise Solang Valley and provide its reputation as a popular ski resort. A few ski agencies offering courses and equipment reside here and operate only during winters.

Snow melts during the summer months starting May and skiing is then replaced by zorbing (a giant ball with room for 2 people which is rolled down a 200 metre hill), paragliding, parachuting and horse riding. A ropeway was recently opened. Going to the summit can be possible by ATVs, Ropeway or Climbing (Trekking)

Maurizio Cattelan

Maurizio Cattelan (21 September 1960, Padua, Italy) is an Italian artist. He is known for his satirical sculptures, particularly La Nona Ora (The Ninth Hour), depicting Pope John Paul II struck down by a meteorite.

Cattelan started his career in the 1980s making wooden furniture in Forlì (Italy), where he came to know some designers, like Ettore Sottsass.

He made a catalogue of his work, which he sent to galleries. This promotion gave him an opening in design and contemporary art. He created a sculpture of an ostrich with its head buried in the ground, wore a costume of a figurine with a giant head of Picasso, and affixed a Milanese gallerist to a wall with tape. During this period, he also created the Oblomov Foundation.

His famous works are:

One of his most discussed art works is “ghost track”: in December 2009 for his solo show in Milan there was a “strange” similarity between the puppets representation of himself and Massimo Tartaglia (Silvio Berlusconi attacker in December 2009). The media effect and many similarities with La Nona Ora (The Ninth Hour) suggest that “ghost track” is truly a ghost art work of Maurizio Cattelan.

Turisti, his new work for the 2011 Venice Biennale made up of 2,000 embalmed pigeons.

The Southern Ridges is a 9-kilometre (5.6 mi) trail that connects parks along the southern ridge of Singapore. Some of the attractions along this trail include its greenery and the connecting bridges. This project linked up the parks between the Kent Ridge Park and HarbourFront. The idea to link these parks was coined in 2002 by Urban Redevelopment Authority (URA) and it took 2 years to complete and cost S$25.5 million.

Source : wikipedia

This 10-km stretch of connecting trails lets you walk among the trees to observe a wide variety of flora and fauna in their natural habitat.

For those who want to get away from – and above – the city and a little closer to nature, the Southern Ridges is a great place to explore. As a bonus, you will also get one of the best panoramic views of the city, harbour and the Southern Islands.

The Southern Ridges is a 10-kilometre stretch of green open spaces spanning the hills of some of Singapore’s most popular parks and gardens, connected by picturesque ridges and pathways.

Imagine walking across a bridge 36-metres above the road connecting two hilltops. You can perform this exhilarating high-wire act at Henderson Waves, a distinctive wave-like structure consisting of a series of undulating curved ‘ribs’, also Singapore’s highest pedestrian bridge.

The Southern Ridges is made up of Mount Faber Park, Telok Blangah Hill Park, Hort Park, Kent Ridge Park and Labrador Nature Reserve.

Bird-watching enthusiasts will be able to catch their favourite creatures in their natural habitat along these trails, while photographers will never run out of picture opportunities of the beautiful flora and fauna found here.

A heart-warming friendship between a three-year-old boy and his fluffy best friend is to feature in a new book.
Little Buddy and labradoodle Reagan have won fans around the world, with more than 100,000 Instagram users keeping up with their adorable antics.
Their friendship blossomed after Buddy was adopted by foster parents when he was 11 months old.
His foster grandparents Sandi and Eric Swiridoff adopted Reagan two years ago, when he was an eight-week-old puppy.
Now Sandi, from Portland in Oregon, USA, has compiled a cute collection of her favourite snaps of the pair – who regularly feature together wearing matching outfits on the @Reagandoodle Instagram account.
Proceeds from the book will go to Foster Parents Night Out, a not-for-profit organisation that works with foster families.
Sandi, a nurse, said: “The touching, true story of Reagan and Little Buddy needed to be told.
“I couldn’t keep all the adorableness to myself.
“Granted, photos of the two of them are regular features on his Instagram, but the book is different.
“It includes never-before-seen photos, showcasing their relationship from the time they first met, up until now, almost two years later.
“Their story is one of a strong bond and a sweet friendship, and includes a few surprises.”
The book will be published next year and will be available online.
Sandi added: “I am so excited for this book to come out.
“And I am thrilled that Reagan is able to make a difference in so many people’s lives.
“Reagan is great with kids and other dogs, he hasn’t met another dog or person that he doesn’t like.
“Adopting Reagan was one of the best decisions we’ve ever made. He has added so much joy to our lives, and to the lives of many other people.
“The little boy was my inspiration for donating profits from the @Reagandoodle calendar to help foster children.”
Photos from the book will also be available as a calendar in time for Christmas.

Spiti valley

Spiti Valley

Spiti valley

C:\Users\user\Pictures\220px-Pin_Valley,_Spiti.jpg

The Spiti Valley is a desert mountain valley located high in the Himalaya mountains. The name “Spiti” means “The Middle Land”, i.e. the land between Tibet and India.

Kunzum la or the Kunzum (altitude 4,551 m; 14,931 ft) is the entrance pass to the Spiti Valley from Lahaul. This district is connected to Manali through the Rohtang Pass. To the south, Spiti ends 24 km from Tabo, at the Sumdo where the road enters Kinnaur and joins with National Highway No. 22.

One of the most interesting places is the Tabo Monastery, located 45 km from Kaza, the capital of the Spiti region. It houses a collection of Buddhist scriptures, Buddhist statues and Thangkas.

Another famous gompa, Kardang monastery, is located at an elevation of 3,500 metres across the river, about 8 km from Keylong. Kardang is well connected by the road via the Tandi bridge which is about 14 km from Keylong. Built in the 12th century, this monastery houses a large library of Buddhist literature including the main Kangyur andTangyur scriptures.

The treacherous weather in Lahaul and Spiti permits visitors to tour only between the months of June to October, when the roads and villages are free of snow and the high passes (Rothang La and Kunzum La) are open. It is possible to access Spiti from Kinnaur (along the Sutlej) all through the year, although the road is sometimes temporarily closed by landslides or avalanches.

Buddhist Monasteries in Spiti: Spiti is one of the important centers of Buddhism in Himachal Pradesh. It is popularly known as the ‘land of lamas’. The valley is dotted by numerous Buddhist Monasteries or Gompas that are famous throughout the world and are a favorite of Dalai Lama.

Flora and Fauna of Spiti Valley: The valley is blessed with the good population of snow leopards, ibex, Himalayan Brown Bear, Musk Deer, Himalayan Blue Sheep etc. which serves as the boon for the wildlife lovers. There are two important protected areas in the region that are a home to snow leopard and its prey including the Pin Valley National Park and Kibber Wildlife Sanctuary. Surprisingly, due to ardent religious beliefs, people of Spiti do not hunt these wild animals.

Apart from the exotic wildlife, the Valley of Spiti is also known for its amazing wealth of flora and the profusion of wild flowers. Some of the most common species found here include Causinia thomsoniiSeseli trilobumCrepis flexuosaCaragana brevifolia and Krascheninikovia ceratoides. Then there are more than 62 species of medicinal plants found here.

Adventure activities:

To- do-Trails: For trekkers, the Spiti Valley is a paradise, offering challenging treks to explore the new heights of the Himalayas. The treks takes you to the most remote areas including the rugged villages and old Gompas followed by the exotic wildlife trails. Some of the popular trekking routes in the area includes Kaza-Langza-Hikim-Komic-Kaza, Kaza-Ki-Kibber-Gete-Kaza, Kaza-Losar-Kunzum La and Kaza-Tabo-Sumdo-Nako. There are some very high altitude treks also where you have to cross passes- like Parangla Pass (connecting Ladakh with Spiti Valley), Pin Parvati Pass, Baba Pass, Hampta Pass treks, Spiti Left Bank Trek are few to name. Please note that you carry all the necessary things before you head out for a trekking tour to Spiti. Tents, sleeping bags, cooking equipment, heavy wooolens, sunscreen and sunglasses are a must.

Skiing: Skiing is the popular adventure sports in Spiti and has been popular in India from the past few years. The amazing snow clad mountains with the added advantage of inspiring heights are enough to allure the adventure spirits of the avid skier, providing all the thrill and fun attracted to the sport. People from all around the globe come to experience this enthralling adventure activity.

Yak Safari: The most exciting of all adventure activities in Spiti is the Yak safari. You can hire the Yak to see the flora and fauna of trans-Himalayan desert. It is, in fact, the lifetime opportunity that you won’t find anywhere else so easily. Apart from this, horse safaris are also conducted in this area.
