The Lightweight Tactical All Terrain Vehicles is small, side-by-side vehicle used by U.S. Special Operations Forces, including those operating in Afghanistan.

Like the four-wheeler vehicles also use, the LTATV provides SOF teams with a highly maneuverable and mobile form of transportation that is also low profile and easily transportable.

Models of LTATVs in use by U.S. SOF include militarized versions of Polaris MRZR and the Kawasaki Tyrex 750. LTATVs can be air transported in MH-47/CH-47 and CV-22/MV-22 rotary-wing aircraft.

Other features include 4-wheel drive front differential lock system, four-point shoulder harness, run-flat tires, roll over protection and infrared headlamp filters. LTATVs can carry two operators and up to 500 pounds of equipment.

The latest is the SkyRunner, an all terrain vehicle that can transform into a light aircraft in a matter of seconds.

The vehicle has just been approved “Safe to Fly” by the Federal Aviation Administration, and talks are underway to manufacture the SkyRunner for use in battle.

Built from carbon fibre and steel, the lightweight tumbler can hit ground speeds of more than 60mph.

But thanks to a built in parachute, the SkyRunner can quickly take to the air, reaching a maximum height of 10,000 feet and air speeds of 40mph.

The SkyRunner company is marketing the vehicle as “the ultimate sightseeing recreational aircraft” suitable for open fields, grass strips and secluded beaches.

However it’s potential has been spotted by the US military, as a low cost and versatile vehicle that could be used to evacuate wounded soldiers from remote battlefields.

At just $43 an hour to operate, it is considerably cheaper top operate than a helicopter, while its ability to reach remote locations from the ground before taking off could potentially rescue soldiers from hard to reach places.

The SkyRunner was created by entrepreneur Stuart Hamel, from Louisiana, who brought in a team of engineering experts to design his vision.
