RMS Titanic was a British passenger liner that sank in the North Atlantic Ocean in the early morning of 15 April 1912, after colliding with an iceberg during her maiden voyage from Southampton to New York City. Of the 2,224 passengers and crew aboard, more than 1,500 died, making it one of the deadliest commercial peacetime maritime disasters in modern history. The largest ship afloat at the time it entered service, the RMS Titanic was the second of three Olympic class ocean liners operated by the White Star Line, and was built by the Harland and Wolff shipyard in Belfast. Thomas Andrews, her architect, died in the disaster.
Under the command of Edward Smith, who went down with the ship, Titanic carried some of the wealthiest people in the world, as well as hundreds of emigrants from Great Britain and Ireland, Scandinavia and elsewhere throughout Europe seeking a new life in North America. A high-power radiotelegraph transmitter was available for sending passenger “marconigrams” and for the ship’s operational use. Although Titanic had advanced safety features such as watertight compartments and remotely activated watertight doors, there were not enough lifeboats to accommodate all of those aboard due to outdated maritime safety regulations. Titanic only carried enough lifeboats for 1,178 people—slightly more than half of the number on board, and one third of her total capacity………………………………..

Saint Alphonsa (19 August 1910 – 28 July 1946) was a Syro-Malabar Catholic Franciscan nun who is now honoured as a saint. Sister Alphonsa became the first native Indian saint, canonised in 2008. Saint Alphonsa was the first woman of Indian origin to be canonised as a saint by the Catholic Church, and the first canonised saint of the Syro-Malabar Catholic Church, an Eastern Catholic Church of the Saint Thomas Christian community.
Saint Alphonsa was born as Anna Muttathupadathu in a Syro-Malabar Nasrani family to Cherian Ousep and Mary Muttathupadathu in Kudamalloor, near Kottayam, on 19 August 1910. Saint Alphonsa was baptised on 26 August. Alphonsamma, as she was locally known, was born in Arpookara, a village in the princely state of Travancore within Kerala, India. This lies within the Archdiocese of Changanassery.
Sister Alphonsa
When it became possible, Anna joined the Franciscan Clarist Congregation, a religious congregation of the Third Order of St. Francis, and through them, completed her schooling.
Anna arrived at the Clarist convent at Bharananganam, Kottayam district, on Pentecost Sunday 1927. She received the postulant’s veil on 2 August 1928 and took the name Alphonsa of the Immaculate Conception in honour of St. Alphonsus Ligouri, whose feast day it was. In May 1929 Sister Alphonsa was assigned to teach at Malayalam High School at Vazhappally. Her foster mother died in 1930. Three days later she resumed her studies at Changanacherry, while working as a temporary teacher at a school at Vakakkad. On 19 May 1930 Alphonsa entered the novitiate of the congregation at Bharananganam. On 11 August 1931, she completed the novitiate and took her first vows.
Health decline
The period 1930–1935 was characterised by grave illness. Sister Alphonsa took her permanent vows on 12 August 1936. Two days later she returned to Bharananganam from Changanacherry. Sister Alphonsa then taught high school at St. Alphonsa Girl’s High School, but was often sick and unable to teach. For most of her years as a Clarist Sister she endured serious illness.
In December 1936, it is claimed that she was cured from her ailments through the intervention of the Kuriakose Elias Chavara (who was beatified at the same ceremony as she), but on 14 June 1939 she was struck by a severe attack of pneumonia, which left her weakened. On 18 October 1940, a thief entered her room in the middle of the night. This traumatic event caused her to suffer amnesia and weakened her again.
Death
She died on 28 July 1946. She is buried at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Bharananganam, Kottayam in the Diocese of Palai.
Veneration
Claims of her miraculous intervention began almost immediately upon her death and often involved the children of the convent school where she used to teach. On 2 December 1953, Cardinal Eugène Tisserant inaugurated the diocesan process for her beatification and Alphonsa was declared a Servant of God.
In 1985, Pope John Paul II formally approved a miracle attributed to her intercession and on 9 July she became “Venerable Sister Alphonsa”
Beatification
Venerable Sister Alphonsa was beatified along with Father Kuriakose Elias Chavara, T.O.C.D., at Kottayam, on 8 February 1986 by Pope John Paul II during his Apostolic Pilgrimage to India.
During his speech at Nehru Stadium, the Pope said that:
“From early in her life, Sister Alphonsa experienced great suffering. With the passing of the years, the heavenly Father gave her an ever fuller share in the Passion of his beloved Son. We recall how she experienced not only physical pain of great intensity, but also the spiritual suffering of being misunderstood and misjudged by others. But she constantly accepted all her sufferings with serenity and trust in God, … She wrote to her spiritual director: “Dear Father, as my good Lord Jesus loves me so very much, I sincerely desire to remain on this sick bed and suffer not only this, but anything else besides, even to the end of the world. I feel now that God has intended my life to be an oblation, a sacrifice of suffering” (20 November 1944). She came to love suffering because she loved the suffering Christ. She learned to love the Cross through her love of the crucified Lord.”
Miracles
Hundreds of miraculous cures are claimed for her intervention, many of them involving straightening of clubbed feet, possibly because of her having lived with deformed feet herself. Two of these cases were submitted to the Congregation for the Causes of Saints as proof of her miraculous intervention. The continuing cures are chronicled in the magazine PassionFlower.
Bishop Sebastian reported:
About ten years ago, when I was in a small village in Wayanad outside Manatavady, I saw a boy walking with some difficulty, using a stick. As he approached me I noted that both of his feet were turned upside down. I had a stack of holy cards in my pocket with Alphonsa’s picture on them, so I pulled one of them out and gave it to the boy. When I told the boy that he should pray to this woman for the cure of his feet, the boy-he was quite smart for a ten-year-old boy-replied, “But I’m a Muslim, and, besides, I was born this way.” I replied that God is very powerful, so let’s pray. A few months later,a boy and a gentleman appeared at the house here.I didn’t recognize them at first but soon learned that it was the Muslim boy with his father, here to tell me that his feet had been cured through their prayers to Sister Alphonsa. They showed me the calluses on the tops of his feet, and you could see the marks which had been made from the years of his walking with his feet turned under. Before they left, the three of us had our pictures taken.
The boy had reportedly taken Alphonsa’s picture card and asked Alphonsa to help fix his feet. Several days afterwards one of his feet supposedly turned around. He and the other members of his family then prayed for the cure of the second foot, which also supposedly turned around later.
Canonization
On Sunday, 12 October 2008, Pope Benedict XVI announced her canonization at a ceremony at Saint Peter’s Square. Indians from across the world, especially people from Kerala, gathered at the ceremony in Rome. Among them was a 10-year-old Kerala boy Jinil Joseph whose clubfoot – a birth defect – was, in the judgment of Vatican officials, miraculously healed after prayers to Alphonsa in 1999.
The final ceremony for the canonization began with the holy relics of Alphonsa being presented to the Pope by Sister Celia, Mother General of the Franciscan Clarist Congregation, the congregation to which Sister Alphonsa belonged. Sister Celia was accompanied by Vice Postulator Father Francis Vadakkel and former Kerala minister K. M. Mani, all holding lit candles. Speaking in English, the Pope declared Sister Alphonsa a saint, after reading excerpts from the Bible. The Pope himself read out the biography of Alphonsa after the ceremony.
In the homily, Pope Benedict XVI recalled Saint Alphonsa’s life as one of “extreme physical and spiritual suffering.”
“This exceptional woman … was convinced that her cross was the very means of reaching the heavenly banquet prepared for her by the Father”, the pope stated. “By accepting the invitation to the wedding feast, and by adorning herself with the garment of God’s grace through prayer and penance, she conformed her life to Christ’s and now delights in the ‘rich fare and choice wines’ of the heavenly kingdom.”
“(Her) heroic virtues of patience, fortitude and perseverance in the midst of deep suffering remind us that God always provides the strength we need to overcome every trial”, the pope stated before the ceremony ended.
Shrine
Her tomb at St. Mary’s Syro-Malabar Catholic Church, Bharananganam has become a pilgrimage site as miracles have been reported by some of the faithful.

The Kalka–Shimla Railway is a 2 ft 6 in (762 mm) narrow gauge railway in North-West India travelling along a mostly mountainous route from Kalka to Shimla to . It is known for dramatic views of the hills and surrounding villages.
The Kalka–Shimla Railway was built to connect Shimla, the summer capital of India during the British Raj, with the Indian rail system. Now, Shimla is the capital city of Himachal Pradesh and Kalka is a town in the Panchkula district of Haryana. The route is famous for its scenery and improbable construction.
The Toy Train route winds from the Himalayan Sivalik foothills at Kalka to several important points such as Dharampur, Solan, Kandaghat, Taradevi, Barog, Salogra, Totu (Jutogh), Summerhill and Shimla at an altitude of 2,076 meters (6,811 ft)
Originally 107 tunnels were built on Kalka Shimla Railway Track and 102 remain in use. The longest tunnel is at Barog. Engineer Colonel Barog dug the tunnel from both ends and could not align them and was symbolically fined one rupee. He couldn’t live with the shame and committed suicide inside the incomplete tunnel. Chief Engineer H.S. Herlington later completed the tunnel with help from Bhalku, a local sadhu
The line has 864 bridges. The railway has a ruling gradient of 1 in 33 or 3%. It has 919 curves, the sharpest being 48 degrees (a radius of 37.47 m or 122.93 feet). Climbing from 656 meters (2,152 ft), the line terminates at an elevation of 2,076 meters (6,811 ft) at Shimla, a difference in height of 1,420 meters (4,660 ft). The line originally used 42 lb/yd (21 kg/m) rail but this was later re-laid to 60 lb/yd (30 kg/m) rail.
The Trevi Fountain, known as the Fontana di Trevi in Italian, is one of the most famous and iconic fountains in the world. It is located in the historic center of Rome, Italy, and is a popular tourist attraction and cultural symbol of the city.
Here are some key facts and details about the Trevi Fountain:
History: The Trevi Fountain has a long history, dating back to ancient Roman times. The current fountain is the result of a Baroque redesign commissioned by Pope Clement XII in the 18th century.
Design: The fountain is a grand and elaborate Baroque masterpiece designed by architect Nicola Salvi. It features a central niche with a colossal statue of Oceanus, the sea god, on a shell-shaped chariot. Oceanus is flanked by two Tritons, one on each side, representing the calm and turbulent seas. The sculptures and decorations are made of white Carrara marble.
Size: The Trevi Fountain is a large monument, measuring approximately 26 meters (85 feet) in height and 49 meters (161 feet) in width. It is one of the largest fountains in Rome.
Water Source: The fountain is fed by the Aqua Virgo, an ancient Roman aqueduct that still supplies water to several fountains in Rome. The water flows from a spout in the niche, representing the source of the Aqua Virgo.
Tradition: A popular tradition associated with the Trevi Fountain involves throwing a coin over your left shoulder with your right hand into the fountain. Legend has it that if you do this, you are ensuring your return to Rome. Throwing two coins will ensure a return and a new romance, while throwing three coins guarantees a return, a new romance, and marriage. The money collected from the fountain is used to support charitable causes.
Movie Fame: The Trevi Fountain has been featured in several famous movies, including the classic film “La Dolce Vita,” in which actress Anita Ekberg famously waded in the fountain’s waters.
Restoration: The fountain underwent a major restoration and cleaning in the mid-2010s, which helped to bring out the brilliant white marble and intricate details of the sculpture.
Visiting Information: The Trevi Fountain is open to the public and is accessible at all hours. However, it can get extremely crowded, so it’s a good idea to visit early in the morning or late in the evening to enjoy it with fewer people.
The Trevi Fountain is not only a masterpiece of art and architecture but also a symbol of love, wishes, and the eternal allure of Rome. It is a must-visit destination for anyone exploring the historic and cultural landmarks of the city.

The Trocadéro is an area of Paris, France, in the 16th arrondissement, across the Seine from the Eiffel Tower. The hill of the Trocadéro is the hill of Chaillot, a former village.
The place was named in honour of the Battle of Trocadero, in which the fortified Isla del Trocadero, in southern Spain, was captured by French forces led by the Duc d’Angoulême, son of the future King of France, Charles X, on August 31, 1823. France had intervened on behalf of King Ferdinand VII of Spain, whose rule was contested by a liberal rebellion. After the battle, the autocratic Spanish Bourbon Ferdinand VII was restored to the throne of Spain.
François-René de Chateaubriand said “To stride across the lands of Spain at one go, to succeed there, where Bonaparte had failed, to triumph on that same soil where the arms of the fantastic man suffered reverses, to do in six months what he couldn’t do in seven years, that was truly prodigious!”
Nowadays the square is officially named Place du Trocadéro et (and) du 11 Novembre (for the WWI armistice), although it is usually simply called the Place du Trocadéro.

The cathedral is particularly noted for its exceptional stained-glass windows of dates from the 13th to the 19th century, with a surface area of 1,500 m², and for the magnificent treasury containing among many other important works the reliquary casket or shrine of Saint Bernard de Clairvaux and his closest friend Saint Malachy of Ireland.
The cathedral, containing the nave, two principal aisles and two further subsidiary aisles, is 114 metres (379 feet 6 inches) long and 50 metres (162 feet 6 inches) wide (across the transepts), with a height from the top of the vault of 29.5 metres (96 feet); the height of the cupola and the tower is 62.34 metres (202 feet 7 inches.
In May 1420, the Treaty of Troyes was signed in the cathedral between Henry V of England, his ally Philip of Burgundy and Queen Isabel, wife of the mad Charles VI of France whereby the throne of France would pass to Henry on the death of Charles rather than to Charles’ son the Dauphin. Henry married Catherine of Valois, the French king’s daughter, shortly afterwards in Troyes, either at the cathedral or the church of St Jean.
In July 1429, Joan of Arc escorted the Dauphin to mass in the cathedral en route to proclaiming him Charles VII of France at Reims Cathedral, in contravention of the recently signed Treaty of Troyes.

Laniakea Beach, also known as Turtle Beach, is one of the best spots to find green sea turtles on Oahu in Hawaii.
Summer is the best time of year to spot green sea turtles at Laniakea Beach, thanks to calmer waters. Sea turtles prefer calmer water and may come ashore to sun themselves during ideal conditions.
The best time time of day for spotting sea turtles at Laniakea is from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.
You can find the more rare Hawksbill Turtle in the water but not basking on the beach. Sea turtles almost never bask on the beach. Several species of green sea turtles do this but only at a few locations worldwide. Hawaii is one of those.
Sea turtles in Hawaii are protected by federal and state law. They are also protected under the Endangered Species Act and their well-being is highly valued by the locals. Please take the following rules to heart if you are close to a turtle:
Never try to touch a turtle.
Do not feed the turtles.
NOAA and DLNR recommend that everyone stay at least 10 feet (3 meters) from all sea turtles.
If maintaining 10 feet distance isn’t possible, keep safety in mind and move away from the animal as carefully as possible.
And, most importantly, enjoy seeing these beautiful creatures.

Umaid Bhawan Palace, located at Jodhpur, is one of the world’s largest private residences. A part of the palace is managed by Taj Hotels. Named after Maharaja Umaid Singh, grandfather of the present owner Gaj Singh of the palace, this edifice has 347 rooms and serves as the principal residence of the erstwhile Jodhpur royal family. A part of the palace also houses a museum.
Umaid Bhawan Palace was called Chittar Palace during its construction due to use of stones drawn from the Chittar hill where it is located. Ground for the foundations of the building was broken on 18 November 1929 by Maharaja Umaid Singh and the construction work was completed in 1943. The Palace was built to provide employment to thousands of people during the time of famine.
Features
The Umaid Bhawan Palace is divided into three functional parts – the residence of the royal family, a luxury Taj Palace Hotel, and a Museum focusing on the 20th century history of the Jodhpur Royal Family.
Palace
The entire palace complex built with sandstone and marble is set in an area of 26 acres (11 ha) of land including 15 acres (6.1 ha) of well tended gardens. The Umaid Bhawan Palace, magnificent in its lavish proportions, consists of a throne chamber, an exclusive private meeting hall, a Durbar Hall to meet the public, a vaulted banquet hall, private dining halls, a ball room, a library, an indoor swimming pool and spa, a billiards room, four tennis courts, two unique marble squash courts, and long passages.
The interior central dome sits above the sky blue inner dome. The inner vaulted dome is a major attraction in the palace which rises to a height of 103 feet (31 m) in the interior part which is capped by an outer dome of 43 feet (13 m) height. The entry to the palace has decorations of the Coat of arms of the Rathore Royal family. The entry leads to the lobby which has polished black granite flooring. The lounge area has pink sandstone and marble floors. Maharaja Gaj Singh, known as “bapji”, stays in a part of the palace. The architecture of the palace is described as an amalgam of lndo-Saracenic, Classical Revival and Western Art Deco styles. It is also said the Maharaja and his architect Lanchester had considered the features of Buddhist and Hindu edifices such as the Temple Mountain-Palaces of Burma and Cambodia, and in particular the Angkor Wat in preparing the layout and design of the palace. The interior of the palace is in art deco design. The interior decoration is credited to J.S. Norblin, a refugee from Poland, who created the frescoes in the throne room on the east wing. An architectural historian commented that “it is the finest example of Indo-deco. The forms are crisp and precise”.
Museum
The museum has exhibits of stuffed leopards, a very large symbolic flag gifted to Maharaja Jaswant Singh by Queen Victoria in 1877, an impressive “quirky” collection of clocks in windmill and light house shapes, and photographs of the elegant art-deco interior of the palace. The classic cars of the Maharajas are also on display in the garden in front of the museum. Glass, porcelain wares, memorabilia, and information on the building of the palace are also part of the exhibits. The Darbar Hall, which is part of the museum, has elegant murals and also substantial number of miniature paintings, armour and an unusual collection of household paraphernalia that was in vogue in the 1930s, which were costly and then not found in India. October to March, during winter season, are the best months to visit the palace and the museum.
A unique feature of this palace is the fact that the manually chiseled sandstone blocks have been put together in a special system of interlocking. There is no mortar binding. The museum which houses model aero planes, weapons, antique clocks, bob watches, priceless crockery and hunting trophies. Both sections retain the ambience of royal splendor.
The palace also has a collection of vintage cars like Rolls Royce Phantom 1927 model, Overland 1906 model, Cadillac 1947 model, Morris Minor, etc. This palace is visible from many places in Jodhpur, and shows us the luxury of the erstwhile Marwar state.

Naples, Italy, is known for its extensive network of underground tunnels and catacombs. These tunnels have historical, cultural, and archaeological significance. Here are some notable underground sites in Naples:
Naples Underground (Napoli Sotterranea): This is a popular tourist attraction that offers guided tours of a vast underground network of tunnels and caverns beneath the historic city center. These tunnels were initially quarries used to extract tuff, a type of volcanic rock, and later served various purposes, including as a refuge during World War II.
Catacombs of San Gennaro: These catacombs are an ancient burial site located in the northern part of Naples. They house the remains of San Gennaro, the city’s patron saint. Visitors can explore the catacombs and view early Christian frescoes.
Catacombs of San Gaudioso: Located in the Rione Sanità district of Naples, these catacombs date back to the 5th century and house the remains of San Gaudioso. They are known for their early Christian artwork and burial niches.
Catacombs of San Severo: These catacombs, also located in Rione Sanità, are less well-known but are equally intriguing. They contain a large number of Christian frescoes and early Christian burials.
Bourbon Tunnel (Galleria Borbonica): Originally constructed in the 19th century, the Bourbon Tunnel was used as an escape route for the royal family during times of crisis. It has also served as a World War II air-raid shelter and a dumping ground for rubble during the post-war cleanup.
Crypta Neapolitana: This is an ancient Roman tunnel and aqueduct that connected Naples to nearby towns. It is believed to be one of the oldest surviving Roman tunnels in Italy.
These underground sites offer a unique opportunity to explore the history, art, and architecture of Naples from a different perspective. They provide insight into the city’s past, including its early Christian heritage and its response to historical challenges such as wars and volcanic eruptions. Visitors interested in these sites can take guided tours to learn more about their historical significance.

The USS Arizona Memorial, at Pearl Harbor in Honolulu, Hawaii, marks the resting place of 1,102 of the 1,177 sailors and Marines killed on USS Arizona (BB-39) during the Japanese surprise attack on Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941 and commemorates the events of that day. The attack on Pearl Harbor and the island of Oahu led to the United States’ direct involvement in World War II.
The memorial, built in 1962, has been visited by more than two million people annually. Accessible only by boat, it straddles the sunken hull of the battleship without touching it. Historical information about the attack, shuttle boats to and from the memorial, and general visitor services are available at the associated USS Arizona Memorial Visitor Center, which opened in 1980 and is operated by the National Park Service. The battleship’s sunken remains were declared a National Historic Landmark on May 5, 1989. Due to damage to its loading ramp, the USS Arizona Memorial was “closed indefinitely” on May 25, 2018.
The USS Arizona Memorial is one of several sites in Hawaii and elsewhere that are part of the World War II Valor in the Pacific National Monument.
The Visitor Center operated by the National Park Service is free to the public and has a museum with exhibits about the Pearl Harbor attack, such as the ship’s bell from the Arizona.
Access to the USS Arizona Memorial is by U.S. Navy boat, for which a numbered ticket, obtained at the Visitor Center and valid for a designated departure time, is required. More than one million people visit the memorial each year. Because of the large number of visitors and the limited number of boat departures, the 4,500 tickets available each day are often fully allocated by mid-morning. Before boarding the boat for the short trip to the Memorial, visitors view a 23-minute documentary film depicting the attack on Pearl Harbor. Touring of the Memorial is self-guided. The National Park Service Web site provides visitor information, including hours of operation and ticketing advisories.
A one-hour audio tour of the Memorial and Center exhibits, narrated by actress Jamie Lee Curtis, whose father, Tony Curtis was a World War II and Navy veteran, is available for rent at the Visitor Center. On the Center’s grounds along the shoreline are more exhibits and a “Remembrance Circle”. Nearby is USS Bowfin, a World War II Diesel submarine, which may be toured with separate, paid admission. The battleship USS Missouri and the Pacific Aviation Museum Pearl Harbor may also be visited, but require a bus ride to Ford Island.

Mahadevar Temple P.O, Vaikom, Kerala 686141

The Vaikom Mahadeva Temple is a temple for the Hindu god Shiva in Vaikom, Kerala. The temple, along with Ettumanoor Siva Temple, Kaduthuruthy Thaliyil Mahadeva Temple is considered a powerful trisome. The belief is that if a devotee worships at these three temples before ‘Ucha pooja’, all the wishes are fulfilled.
The Vaikom Mahadeva temple is one of the few temples which is held in reverence by both Shaivaites and the Vaishnavaites. Vaikom’s Shiva is fondly called Vaikkathappan. The Shiva Linga here is believed to be from the ‘Treta yuga’ and considered as one of the oldest temples in Kerala where pooja has not been broken since inception.
The temple is one of the major Shiva temples in Kerala counted along with the Ettumanoor Mahadevar Temple, Kaduthruthy Mahadeva Temple, Chengannur Mahadeva Temple, Ernakulam Shiva Temple and Vadakkunathan temple.
Architecture
One of the bigger temples in Kerala, the Vaikom Mahadeva Temple has a courtyard of about eight acres of land. The premises levelled with river sand is protected by compound walls with four Gopuras or towers on all the four sides. The Sreekovil is round in shape roofed with copper sheets and with two chambers. The Mukha Mandapa – the first chamber is built in shaped stone and single piece woods. The walls and pillars are very strong. The Garbha Griha(Sanctum Santorium) – the second chamber is built completely in stone including the roof in a square shape. It is a very curious and peculiar fact that we are unable to obtain the Darsana of the Supreme Saiva Chaitanya from this Sreekovil without passing through a ‘six steps’ either from the Gopura or the Nada. It may be reminding us the Shad (six) vikaras (emotions) such as Kama, Krodha, Lobha, Moha, Madha and Mathsarya or the thantrik chakras as per the thanthrik Kalpana.
Vaikom Ashtami
The Vaikom temple is famous for the Vaikom Ashtami (Vaikathashtami), one of its main festivals, which is held in November–December. The exact date of the festival is determined by the Malayalam calendar.
Vaikathashtami is celebrated on the day of Krishna Ashtami. The legend behind this festival is that years ago a saint man named Vyaghrapada prayed to God siva for years after many years God siva and his wife Parvathy Devi appeared in front of him. It is believed that god Siva appeared in front of him in the day of Krishna Ashtami. So as a memory of this Vaikathashtami is celebrated. It is the festival extending for 12 days. 12th day is Vaikathashtami.

Valiathura is a suburb of Tyhiruvanathapuram, the capital of Kerala, India. This was once the only port along the South Kerala coast. When Kochi became the prominent port in Kerala, Valiyathura lost its significance as a major port. Now Valiathura is considered as a fishing port.
Valiathura is famous for its pier. The 60-years-old, 703-foot (214 m) pier and the godowns (warehouses) behind it are a far cry from the past, when up to 50 cargo ships used to call here at a time. Opened in 1956, it was the only port along the South Kerala coast.
Supported by 127 concrete piles, the pier had four 3-tonne cranes and one 10-tonner to unload cargo from the ships. Since the pier was located in shallow waters, heavy ships had to anchor in the deep sea and transport their ware in smaller boats. With the development of the Kochi port with facilities for berthing of huge cargo ships, Valiathura lost its significance. It was declared a ‘dead port’ in the early 1980s.
All five cranes were dismantled and sold as scrap as disuse and constant exposure to salty winds eroded their structure. The four godowns were rented out to industrial units on the Veli belt. The rails used by trolleys to transport cargo to the godowns have rusted away.
The pier which consumed 571 tonnes of cement and 250 tonnes of steel, cost about Rs.10 lakhs (Rs. one million) to build. Till today, the fishermen along the coast use the weakened structure to launch their catamarans during the rough monsoon months, when the rough sea makes the beaches inaccessible. They then jump into the sea and swim to the catamarans.
Currently visitors are prohibited from going out on Valiathura pier.

On the Observatory Hills is located Viceregal Lodge, which is also known as “Rashtrapati Niwas”. This magnificent building was the residence of the British Viceroy Lord Dufferin. This lodge was completed in 1888 and it is said that every brick for the building was carried by mules. This is a six-story building and is surrounded by well-maintained gardens and lawns. The Rashtrapati Niwas, also known as Viceregal Lodge, is located on the Observatory Hills of Shimla, Himachal Pradesh, India. It was formerly the residence of the British Viceroy of India. It houses some of the most ancient articles and photographs going back to the times of the British rule in India.
The Viceregal Lodge was designed by British architect Henry Irwin and built in the Jacobethan style during the regime of Lord Dufferin. Its construction started in 1880 and was completed in 1888. Lord Dufferin occupied the lodge on July 23, 1888.
The summer capital of British India was of little use to the President of India who visited it only for a few days in the year, if at all. Professor S.Radhakrishnan thought of putting it to academic use. The Rashtrapati Nivas Estate was transferred to the Ministry of Education to be handed over to the Indian Institute of Advanced Study. The C.P.W.D., the Himachal Pradesh High Court, and the Himachal Pradesh University were allowed in due course to use some of its buildings but the bulk of the Estate, including its well kept lawns and rich greenhouse, has remained in use for the Indian Institute of Advanced Study.

The Willis Tower (colloquial: Sears Tower, its name for 36 years) is a 110-story, 1,450-foot (442.1 m) skyscraper in Chicago, Illinois. At completion in 1973, it surpassed the World Trade Center in New York to become the tallest building in the world, a title it held for nearly 25 years; it was the tallest building in the Western Hemisphere for 41 years, until the new One World Trade Center surpassed it in 2014. Willis Tower is considered a seminal achievement for architect Fazlur Rahman Khan. It is currently the second-tallest building in the United States and the Western hemisphere – and the 16th-tallest in the world. Each year, more than one million people visit its observation deck, the highest in the United States, making it one of Chicago’s most popular tourist destinations. The structure was renamed in 2009 by the Willis Group as a term of its lease.
As of April 2018, the building’s largest tenant is United Airlines, which moved its corporate headquarters from 77 West Wacker Drive (then the United Building) in 2012, occupying around 20 floors. Other major tenants include the building’s namesake Willis Group and law firms Schiff Hardin and Seyfarth Shaw. Morgan Stanley plans to move to the building in 2019 and become its fourth-largest tenant by 2020.

The Willis Tower observation deck, called the Skydeck, opened on June 22, 1974. Located on the 103rd floor at an elevation of 1,353 feet (412.4 m), it is the highest observation deck in the United States and one of Chicago’s most famous tourist attractions. Tourists can experience how the building sways in wind and see far over the plains of Illinois and across Lake Michigan to Indiana, Michigan, and Wisconsin in clear conditions. Elevators reach the top in about 60 seconds, allowing occupants to feel the change in pressure as they ascend. The Skydeck competes with the John Hancock Center’s observation floor a mile and a half away but reaching 323 feet (98.5 m) lower. Some 1.7 million tourists visit annually. A second observation deck on the 99th floor serves as a backup. The tourist entrance can be found on the south side of the building along Jackson Boulevard.
In January 2009, a major renovation of the Skydeck was begun, including the installation of retractable glass balconies which extend approximately 4 feet (1.2 m) from the facade of the 103rd floor, overlooking South Wacker Drive. The all-glass boxes, informally dubbed “The Ledge”, allow visitors to see the street below. The boxes, which can accommodate 5 short tons (4.5 metric tons), opened to the public on July 2, 2009. On May 29, 2014, the laminated glass flooring of one of the boxes shattered while visitors were inside but there were no injuries. The flooring on that same box shattered on June 12, 2019.

Airlander ( Flying Bum )
The Hybrid Air Vehicles HAV 304 / Airlander 10 also known as Fyuing Bum is a hybrid airship designed and manufactured by British manufacturer Hybrid Air Vehicles (HAV). Comprising an airship with auxiliary wing and tail surfaces, it flies using both aerostatic and aerodynamic lift and is powered by four diesel engine-driven ducted propellers. The Airlander 10 has the distinction of being the largest aircraft flying today.
In its original form as the HAV 304, it was built for the United States Army’s Long Endurance Multi-intelligence Vehicle (LEMV) programme. The requirement was for a medium-altitude long-endurance unmanned aerial vehicle able to provide Intelligence, surveillance, target acquisition, and reconnaissance (ISTAR) support for ground troops. In 2012, the HAV 304 conducted its maiden flight at Lakehurst, New Jersey, in the United States. In 2013, the LEMV project, and thus development of the HAV 304, was cancelled by the US Army.
Following the termination of the LEMV programme, HAV reacquired the airship and brought it back to RAF Cardington in England. It was reassembled and modified for civilian use, and in this form was redesignated as the Airlander 10. In August 2016, the reassembled airship returned to the skies. On 24 August, near the end of its second test flight, the Airlander 10 made a hard landing at Cardington Airfield after listing forward, damaging its cockpit. After 4 months of repairs, the airship was relaunched in December that year.

Guinness World Records
Guinness World Records, known from its inception in 1955 until 1998 as The Guinness Book of Records and in previous U.S. editions as The Guinness Book of World Records, is a reference book published annually, listing world records and national records, both of human achievements and the extremes of the natural world. The book itself holds a world record, as the best-selling copyrighted book of all time. As of the 2017 edition, it is now in its 63rd year of publication, published in 100 countries and 23 languages. The international franchise has extended beyond print to include television series and museums. The popularity of the franchise has resulted in Guinness World Records becoming the primary international authority on the cataloguing and verification of a huge number of world records; the organization employs official record adjudicators authorised to verify the authenticity of the setting and breaking of records.

For many records, Guinness World Records is the effective authority on the exact requirements for them and with whom records reside, the company providing adjudicators to events to determine the veracity of record attempts. The list of records which the Guinness World Records covers is not fixed; records may be added and also removed for various reasons. The public are invited to submit applications for records, which can be either the bettering of existing records or substantial achievements which could constitute a new record. The company also provides corporate services for companies to “harness the power of record-breaking to deliver tangible success for their businesses.

A sari, saree, or shari is a female garment from the Indian subcontinent that consists of a drape varying from five to nine yards (4.5 metres to 8 metres) in length[2] and two to four feet (60 cm to 1.20 m) in breadth that is typically wrapped around the waist, with one end draped over the shoulder, baring the midriff. There are various styles of sari draping, the most common being the Nivi style, which originated in Andhra Pradesh.
The sari is usually worn over a petticoat (called ‘parkar’ in Marathi lahaṅgā or lehenga in the north; pavadai in Tamil, pavada (or occasionally langa) in Malayalam, Kannada and Telugu, chaniyo, parkar, ghaghra, or ghagaro in the west; and shaya in eastern India), with a fitted upper garment commonly called a blouse (ravike in South India and choli elsewhere). The blouse has short sleeves and is usually cropped at the midriff. The sari is associated with grace and is widely regarded as a symbol of grace in cultures of the Indian subcontinent.
The word sari described in Sanskrit which means ‘strip of cloth’ and śāḍī in Pali, and which was corrupted to sāṛī in modern Indian languages. The word ‘Sattika’ is mentioned as describing women’s attire in ancient India in Sanskrit literature and Buddhist literature called Jatakas. This could be equivalent to modern day ‘Sari’. The term for female bodice, the choli evolved from ancient Stanapatta. Rajatarangini (meaning the ‘river of kings’), a tenth-century literary work by Kalhana, states that the choli from the Deccan was introduced under the royal order in Kashmir.
In the history of Indian clothing the sari is traced back to the Indus Valley Civilisation, which flourished during 2800–1800 BC around the northwestern part of the Indian subcontinent. Cotton was first cultivated and woven in Indian subcontinent around 5th millennium BC. Dyes used during this period are still in use, particularly indigo, lac, red madder and turmeric. Silk was woven around 2450 BC and 2000 BC. The earliest known depiction of the sari in the Indian subcontinent is the statue of an Indus Valley priest wearing a drape.
Xi Beach is situated in the south of the Paliki peninsula of Kefalonia, Greece and part of the district Mantzavinata near the town Lixouri.
The beach is a 4 km strip of sand which is up to 50 m wide in places. Several roads branch on the approach to the area and bring one out at different locations along its length, usually close to a bar, taverna or apartment complex.
Xi is renowned for its soft, red sand. It is a blue-flag beach [2]
The sand slopes reasonably gently so that one can go out a distance from the shoreline.
The areas of the beach that are close to hotels are developed and organised with beach loungers and sun shades. Areas that are away from amenities present a more natural aspect.
Well-made roads lead down to the beach areas.
At the end of the roads, car parking is located on-road or in car parks linked with Tavernas. This can be crowded at the height of the tourist season.
There are several large Tavernas providing drinks and meals along the 4 km (2.5 mi) length of the beach area.
Beach loungers and umbrellas are for hire in some areas of the beach, usually at points where hotels, Tavernas or bars are situated close to the beach.
The area has some hotel complexes and apartments. The beaches are associated with a high population density of tourists in high season. In September the number of tourists decreases significantly, with continuation of good weather.

Getting around an airport may never be the same.
A Chicago businessman is selling a rideable carry-on bag. Rather than pulling your luggage from terminal to terminal, travelers can sit on the Modobag and reach speeds up to 8 mph thanks to an electric motor.
“We’re not trying to make anyone lazy,” said Kevin O’Donnell, the founder of Modobag. “It’s about life efficiency.”
He’s selling the bag for about $1,000 during an Indiegogo campaign. It’s small enough to be carried on almost any airline.
But O’Donnell envisions customers using the bag for more than just airport travel. He recommends office workers ride it to the train or around large conferences. O’Donnell regularly takes his Modobag in Chicago bike lanes to run errands.
Yueh Hai Ching Temple also known as Wak Hai Cheng Bio in the Teochew dialect, is a Chinese temple in Singapore located in Rafffles Place, Singapore’s central business district. The temple, whose name literally means “Qing Dynasty styled Temple of the Cantonese seas” was the first stop for Chinese immigrants to Singapore in the early 19th century.
Yueh Hai Ching Temple is Singapore’s oldest Taoist temple. It was constructed between 1850 and 1855, and was rebuilt in 1895. The temple holds a special significance for the Teochew community, whose way of life was closely associated with the sea.
Designed by Chinese craftsmen, the temple was constructed with rosewood imported from China. It is the only temple in Singapore to have detailed three-dimensional moulded ornaments on its roof as well as legendary Chinese figures engraved on its walls. Wooden plaques depicting auspicious characters, donated by traders and devotees, can be seen within its perimeter. The Guangxu Emperor presented a plaque to the temple in 1907.
The Yueh Hai Ching Temple is divided into two parts, one dedicated to the Jade Emperor (Heavenly Father), the other to Mazu (Heavenly Mother). The temple is especially busy during the first and fifteenth day of each lunar month, as well as the third and twenty-third days of the third lunar month, which celebrate the birthdays of the Heavenly Father and Heavenly Mother.
After nearly a century and a half in existence, and following a painstaking two-year restoration by artisans from China ending in 1997, the temple was gazetted as a National Monument.
Today, the impressive temple attracts not only devotees who pray for safety and luck, but also many tourists.
Zakynthos Alykes Beach : The area of Alykes Zante (or Alikes) is located 18 km north-west of the capital of Zakynthos and took its name from the salt-pits (alykes in Greek) hidden behind the village of Alykes. Those salt-pits used to be the main source of income and wealth of the islanders. A beautiful sandy beach can be found in Alykes, attracting many visitors for its amazing sand and crystalline waters. The main road passing through the settlement is boarded by a lot of restaurants, bars and tourist shops.

This photo of Musee Zervos is courtesy of TripAdvisor
The Zervos Museum is housed in an old house where the writer Romain Rolland lived from 1938 and where he died in 1944. The museum, opened in 2006, houses the most beautiful pieces of the collection bequeathed in 1970 to the city of Vézelay by Christian Zervos . Critic and publisher of art, founder of the magazine Cahiers d’art published from 1926 to 1960, Christian Zervos rubbed shoulders with the greatest artists of the twentieth century .
On the ground floor, small sculptures and an imposing cast iron relief by Henri Laurens alongside a large mobile Calder, while in the room Picasso, works by Pablo Picasso and Julio González show the links that existed between these two artists.
Upstairs are sculptures by Giacometti , paintings by Ernst ( The Grasshopper ), Kandinsky , Miró , Jean Helion , Victor Brauner and Willi Baumeister . For the 1950s, works by Jacques Villon , Nicolas de Stael , Serge Poliakoff , Joseph Sima or Etienne Hajdu
The room of Romain Rolland is preserved; furniture of the writer is presented.
In the attic are exposed the Cahiers d’Art , the catalog raisonné of the work of Picasso (undertaken by Zervos in 1932, at the request of the artist) and his publisher activity showing the great diversity of talents of Zervos, and his curiosity with the collection of objects from the ancient Mediterranean world: Cycladic idols, figurines from Egypt, Cyprus and archaic Greece.
The first mural of Fernand Léger , made in Vézelay, is presented on the ground floor in a space giving access to the terrace and the gardener’s house , reserved for temporary presentations.
The museum has medieval basements and its terrace opens onto the Morvan .

The Zoological Park Thiruvanathapuram or Thiruvananthapuram Zoo (also known as Trivandrum Zoo) is located in the city of Thirvanathapuram, the capital of Kerala, India. It occupies 55 acres (22 ha) of woodland, lakes, and lawns. It is the oldest zoo in Asia. Swathi Thirunal Rama Varma, who ruled Travancore between 1830 and 1847, established a menagerie where royal tigers, panthers, cheetahs, deer, boar, and other wild animals were kept. His brother Uthram Thrunal and British Resident William Cullen formally establish the zoo in 1857 as an annex to the Napier Museum. The zoo was originally built with the typical iron-barred cages prevalent at the time, and was designed for recreational purposes, but with increased loss of forest and wildlife due to human development, the goal of the Zoo has changed from recreation to conservation.
The Thiruvananthapuram Zoo is home to 82 species from around the world. Indigenous species at the zoo include lion-tailed macaque, Nilgiri langur, Indian rhinoceros ,Asiatic lion, royal Bengal tiger, white tiger and leopard, as well Asian elephants. Animals from Africa include giraffes, hippos, zebras, and Cape buffalos. The zoo also includes a snake farm which exhibits both poisonous and non-poisonous snakes and also have 7 Anacondas.
