The Museu Historico Nacional as it is commonly referred to by the locals is one of the largest museums in the city. This national history museum is housed in a fort dating back to the latter half of the 1500s.
Built initially as a fort, the complex had later additions in the form of a barracks, an armory, and a prison. Today, all of the structures in the premises serve as a repository for the important historical documents and artifacts of Brazilian history, which is regarded as the largest numismatic collection in and of Latin America.
On the ground floor, the galleries that are not to be missed are Sacred Art, which features very painstakingly done religious art and other religious symbols, and also the display of beautiful wooden carriages. On the first floor you will find the historic archives and library as well as all the temporary exhibitions. The Reigna real Gallery is one of the most prestigious galleries where temporary exhibitions take place.
