White Hall complex, Gangtok
The flower show exhibition complex is situated just below the Ridge Park and adjacent to the White Memorial Hall that draws numerous visitors during the annual flower exhibition. Located not very far from the main town, one can easily walk to the flower exhibition center or take a cab. Here you can find many varieties of Orchids and other flowers most of the year, but best time to visit this place is around April-May (spring season), when the management gathers and showcases fresh varieties of orchids and other flowers from around the state. The climate of Sikkim is exceedingly conducive to cultivate orchids and other variety of flowers. The Government of Sikkim invites participants from the neighboring states also to participate in the annual flower show contest.
The Ridge Park is a site developed for visitors and is a small stretch of plain straight road leading to the Palace gate. It is just about fifteen minutes walk from the main market. The Ridge has the White Hall and the Chief Minister’s official residence, known as the Mintokgang, meaning “blossomed crowned hilltop” on one end and the beautifully designed Palace Gate with a Pagoda rooftop on the other end. A statue of Nehru, the late Prime Minister of India, adorns the roundabout above White Hall. White Hall was built in the memory of first Political officer of Sikkim, Claude White in 1932. White hall is a small two storied building and has typical British architecture, all the important functions used to be held in this hall, till 1960. Situated on the Ridge is also a beautiful Sikkimese designed resting shed for visitors. The Ridge is lined with ornamental plants and trees which when bloom are a riot of colours.
