Bhagsu Waterfalls
Bhagsu is like a picturesque taste of Indian village life combined with technology; many of the old authentic houses here share the landscape with recently built guest houses catering to the increasing number of visitors.
Bhagsu has a known ancient Shiv temple. The main attraction for the tourists is not only the temple but also the Bhagsu waterfall and the public swimming pool.
Bhagsu waterfalls is located in Bhagsunaag village, 2 kms from McLeodganj, behind the Bhagsu temple, in the district of Dharmasala, state of Himachal Pradesh. The waterfall is 7112 feet (2165 meters) in height.
The name of the waterfall has been derived from that of the vanquished King Bhagsu. The folklore that makes it round in the place is that about 5000 years ago, Nagdevta, the snake God declared a war against King Bhagsu who dared to steal the sacred water from Nagdal Lake. The king was defeated by Nagdevta and forgiven. At this site was built the sacred Bhagsunag temple which gives importance to the king and to the snake god and the waterfall got the name of Bhagsunag. The temple is revered by the Ghorkhali community.
Bhagsu waterfalls is a spectacular sight especially because it needs a bit of hard trek to reach there. One needs to climb half a mountain with marked pathways. There is a marked path littered with beautiful stones that was actually a river which dried up during the dry season.
The inhabitants in the villages and towns nearby are mainly Gorkhas. There are a large number of Israelis in Bhagsu, the vicinity around McLeodganj has Haddy, a shepherd tribe. They are the original inhabitants from Dhauladhar, and the followers of spiritual leader and head monks of the Gelugpa lineage of Tibetan Bhudhism Dalai Lama, who lives in McLeodganj. The people mainly speak Hindi, Gorkhali and a smattering of English, because they have to communicate with so many foreign tourists from all over the world.
