The church Saint – Lazare is the church of the city of Avallon in Burgundy . Its architecture is Romanesque and its portal dated xii th century . It is dedicated to Saint Lazarus
One can recognize the architectural style of the Burgundy School of the xii th century , or school of Cluny , remarkable for the elegance of decorative sculptures. Victor Petit saw besides the work of ” colonies of workers from Cluny or Autun “.
The vault in the cul-de-four who finished the apse is characteristic of this period, while the frescoes that adorn it are the xix th century .
A particularity of Saint-Lazare appears on the plan: the facade is not perpendicular to the axis of the nave . Another irregularity awaits the visitor or the faithful: the choir is located 2.50 m below the gate, level difference caught by 17 steps and large oblique landings
The chapel right of the choir includes stalls for the canons , it is decorated with paintings in trompe l’oeil of the xviii th century .
In the aisle south, one can see a stone statue of St. Michael slaying the dragon ( xiv th century ), a stone sculpture of Saint Anne and the Virgin (late xv th century ), painted wooden statues of the xvii th century .
In the gallery overlooking the nave, there is a large organ case carved in 1864 .
